Gangotri Temple Tour Guide :
• Gangotri Dham Tour Pla...
Gomukh is the source of the Bhagirathi River in Gangotri Glacier, one of the primary headstreams of the Ganges River. The place is situated at a height of 13,200 ft (4,023 m) in Uttarkashi district.
Gomukh is mentioned in the Puranas. It is said there that, searching a lost sheep, a boy reached near a glacier in Gangotri, the snout of which exactly looked like the face of a Cow, and thus it got its name 'Gomukh' .
The 18km trek is usually covered in 2 days. There is no place to stay at Gaumukh.
The holy Ganga River gushes from Gaumukh in Gangotri Glacier and flows in eternity to nourish the Indo-Gangetic plain. Having a holy dip in the water of Ganges is considered to be pious, as it cleanses the spirit and connects the soul with god.
Gomukh finds significant mention in ancient Hindu texts. One of the legends has a boy, who, while searching for his lost sheep, reached close to a glacier in Gangotri. Interestingly, the snout of the glacier resembled the mouth of a cow, and he named it thus.
It is safe to trek. From Gangotri, you'll trek through the gurgling Bhagirathi river to Gaumukh, where you will see the glacier and witness the beginning of this holy river.
Gaumukh Glacier is the source of Bhagirathi River which is also referred to as Ganga before its confluence with Alaknanda River at Devprayag. Note: In recent times, the retreat of the glacier has quickened extensively.
Tapovan is famous for its big mountain views. You see some of the most historic Indian mountains right from its base. Mount Shivling is an extraordinary mountain to view. The peak is poised with such a beautiful gait and framework which makes it look elegant and mesmerizing.
Gomukh, which is about 18 km (11.2 mi) from the town of Gangotri, is the precise source of the Bhagirathi river, an important tributary of the Ganges. Gomukh is situated near the base of Shivling; in between lies the Tapovan meadow. The Gangotri glacier is a traditional Hindu pilgrimage site.
At the foot of Shivling peak, a barren area at about 4,463m (14640 feet) elevation, is a seasonal home to several sadhus living in caves, huts, etc. and it has become a trekking destination also.
Tapovan (Sanskrit) is derived from the two root words tapas, which means “penance” and, by extension, “religious mortification” and “austerity,” and, more broadly, “spiritual practice,” and vana, which means “forest” or “thicket.” Tapovan translates as a “forest of austerities or spiritual practice.”
What is the best time to visit Gaumukh? September - June is the best time to visit Gaumukh. The sacred site of Gaumukh, from where the glacier finally starts melting giving birth to the great river, is best visited from April to June and again from September to November.
Usually, the best time to visit Gaumukh - Taovan Trek is in summer and autumn i.e. from May to June and September till last week of October. Winters and rains are too harsh in this region so the trek is closed at that time.
Beyond Gaumukh, the established trail gives way to a poorly defined route across scree, glacial moraine, and boulder fields to Tapovan. The legendary peaks - Bhagirathi, Meru, Kedarnath, Shivling all lie in this region and contribute to the most magnificent mountain scenery in the Himalayas.
Gomukh is located inside the Gangotri National Park and is accessible only by foot (trek). The starting point of the trek is from Gangotri, so one has to reach Gangotri first. The entire route from Gangotri to Gaumukh is filled with natural beauty. The Bhagirathi river will keep you company until the end.
