Gondang Sabangunan Bolon Parmalim (Ugamo Malim), is an ancient kind of traditional Batak music ensemble, here recorded in July 2009 at Huta Tinggi, North Sumatra.
'Parmalim', or 'Ugamo Malim' is the earliest known systematised pre-Christian Batak belief system that is still practiced today. Participants travel from a wide range of places in Indonesia to take part in large devotional ceremonies, this footage being an example of the annual 'Sipaha Lima', often also called 'Pamalean na Badia' (the holy sacrificial ceremony), and is a movable feast, taking place in July.
In this video Maningar Sitorus performs on the Taganning (percussion), coupled with Maringan Sitorus on the Sarune Bolon (double-reed shawm).
I recorded this footage on a then state-of-the-art camera generously loaned to me from the University of London.
