Awesome video! When I played this for the first time, all I heard was that it was about lesbians, so, as a gay man, I was pretty excited to play it, and there were just so many parts that I could see myself in, and not just the gay stuff haha. Sam's relationship with Daniel, despite being mostly minor, really got to me. The whole "default friends" thing and how Sam talks about that he only got weirder is uncomfortably relatable to me. My only friends were two kids from down the block and as I got older my mental disorder(s) began to show more and more symptoms/I got more comfortable not hiding those symptoms, so from other people's perspective, I'm sure I got weirder and weirder over the years. I am unfortunately not friends with those people anymore and we never had a conversation like Sam and Daniel did, so just listening to Sam talk about how she apologized for not being friends anymore and then Daniel saying that it was all going to be okay.... it was just really cathartic, to put it mildly, haha. It's interesting hearing the perspective of someone who thought of the game as a (potential) horror game, as that was definitely not my experience. Especially since, I assume, most people went in expecting horror. When I played, it definitely felt creepy sometimes, but not in a horror way, more like walking through your own house at night; you KNOW that there's nothing around the corner, but that doesn't stop your heart from beating a little faster before you turn around it. I feel like I might have been disappointed if I went in expecting a horror game, though I also really enjoyed the actual story so maybe not. Also kinda relevant to this point, I really enjoyed all the ghost metaphors and stuff you talked about. Considering I mostly dismissed it out of hand, it was nice having that stuff slotted more appropriately into the story. Also, when Sam is talking about her talk with her parents about Lonnie, she says to Katie "I had an... interesting talk with mom and dad tonight. One YOU'RE never going to need to have," which feels... ironic? In a bad way. Like, she just assumes her sister isn't a queer woman? Which is exactly what her parents are doing to her. None of the postcards talk about a boyfriend, and even if they did that wouldn't mean Katie is straight. Idk, it probably doesn't matter that much, I'm probably just taking it too personally, I know I would have been insulted if my brother had said something like that to me before I came out lmao. Unrelated, but, if you read this, have you played Deltarune or plan on playing it? And if so, do you think you'll make an analysis on it? I'd imagine a bigger analysis like this wouldn't happen until the game is done, but something smaller with some preliminary thoughts could be cool. No pressure or anything, though hopefully that's obvious lol. Sorry for leaving a comment essay on your video essay, I just had a lot to say apparently lol. I really enjoyed the video! Looking forward to whatever you do next!

don't apologise, i appreciate the comment essay :) i can see what you're saying regarding sam assuming, i think i just took it at face value as kate's character isn't really explored deep enough to make many concrete insights involving her, but that's just my opinion. as for deltarune, i haven't played chapter 1 or 2, and i think i'll just wait until the whole thing's out. considering how dependent undertale is on its endings, a video about only a portion of the game would probably become redundant as it continues to release. if a video like that was to happen, it may not be for a bit, as i already know what game the next video will be on. but thatnks again, and I'm glad you liked the video!

I think the whole “assuming Katie is straight” thing might come from feeling the pressure to have at least one… “normal, socially acceptable child” in the family to keep the parents from being too concerned about all their children straying too far away from what they think is best for them, when another child ends up being “not normal” from their perspective

Thank you for making such a thoughtful analysis video on this video game! I played this game in two long chunks of time and really enjoyed it! I knew it was about the player’s gay sister and her secret girlfriend going in, but that didn’t stop me from being terrified in this giant house. There was an entire room (or more?) in the basement I never even explored because the lights wouldn’t turn in and I was too scared to go in without a light. I think I would’ve liked a bit more thematic exploration of the horrors and hauntings present in this house - like, the moment I found that TV Guide scrap that indicated Sam and Katie’s parents were researching conversion camps was the moment the house became 100% a site of horror for me, and I would’ve loved more moments like that. But also, I know I missed a lot of clues that provided the family history (I’m still missing massive chunks of the family history between Terrence, his father, and Oscar). I’ll definitely have to play again and try and learn more about the family history.

something that i really like is how it flips the hero’s journey of leaving home, entering the unknown, and coming back changed for the better by instead having the protagonist come back from their journey and finding that it’s their home that has changed, leaving ghosts of the people that used to be there via the notes showing that they’ve been on their own journeys as well

honestly i think someone who talked about this game said it kind of well this game feels more like a teach demo then a game i mean its a full game but it really shows what games are capable of and i feel like its a bit of a shame we dont see more games like this even today(i personally feel like 1)they should be longer 2)there should be more of a mystery/horror element. firewatch was actually an interesting example of another game showing what was capeable with video games.
