I remember watching this movie in German class in middle school, and it worked superbly as a mean to teach us about the tremendous differences between the eastern and the western part of Germany. For some reason the only scene that I still remember is the one with the coca cola banner.

One of the best movies ever. But nobody threw out the whole furniture and renovated the apartment on the next day after the fall of the wall. My grandma is still living with all her furniture which we thought before the fall of the wall. Even after 28 yeara

terrible times. the whole country was a huge prison. they destroyed people's minds and made them obey. you still feel it now if you go to Eastern Europe, even Czechia, Poland etc..

Ahh, how sad... This movie makes it look yea a bit rigid regime, but the darker side doesn't appear wholy, I think. I hope all of you are living so better and I wish all of you the best! Greets from Mexico! (Even if we had darker times as well, but I never experienced it by myself). *hugs*

my parnts and grandparents lived in Soviet Russia, and here in the movie is Germany. Russia was much much worse during that times. some say even now Russia is worse than the GDR in 1980s
@undine117

Oh! I bet it was heavier in Russia. I read some time ago about Galina Vishnevskata and Rostropovich... All the stuff they went through, from the top to the bottom. Soviet regime was really an evil thing. Well, not the regime itself but the corrupt people who managed it. The GDR suffered with the crazy Stasi ( and those fellas had such reputation, ZOMFG), I cannot imagine then, how people lived in Russia, all of your people are so brave and resilient. :'C My admiration to all of you. Hope better and greater times will come to the ex-soviet republics.

The film examines the deep fear of political reprisal during the Soviet regimes, the painful dislocation of flight to the West, and reveals how secrets and lies have shaped both the government and this small family.
