I bought an Anderson stripped lower in California in 2015. There were a lot of home invasion robberies going on with multiple attackers. My 1911 and 870 were now inadequate in my opinion for home defense. Even with 10 rd mag limitation the ar platform was superior. My problem was stealthily buying this rifle piece by piece to fly under wifey's radar. Turners had an A2 style kit for 300 bucks. With lower parts. So I completed the carbine and bought 6 10 rd pmags. Now at least I had a nightstand carbine. Fast forward 9 years and I don't want to get rid of the gun. Plus I'm busy trying to outfit my 17 yo. We're in Texas now on a 10 acre rancho. Whatever I do to this carbine now to upgrade it makes sense to me. Because martital harmony is important. I bought my son a freedom rifle with an mlock free floating rail. And I am not going to go super cheap with his accessories. So this is why some people Don't buy expensive stuff to begin with.

I agree with most of what you added for "cheap/budget" add-ons, except the red dot. If you are looking for possibly the best "bang for your buck" for low light/night time....then get a front sight post with tritium inserts. This will keep you in the same "correct" sighting position whether using the rifle daytime or nighttime, and just the post is much cheaper than the red dot/mounting system needed for the carry handle setup. I know, I have an A2 carbine upper set up much like Magic's, and it works great with the irons/tritium front post for dark work.

Assuming someone is sticking to an upper with front sight post gas block instead of free float rail the couple changes I'd make are: swapping the sling for a Blue Force gear or SOE Tactical sling, they're still not that spendy especially for the quality and functionality and they're still $45-65ish which isn't bad at all. I would like to comment that the combination of Redi Mag’s Redi-catch and Redi-release ($98 when bought together) have been my favorite add-on accessory to my budget ar15. It allows bolt catch with the holding of the mag release for clearing issues. Which is ONLY duplicated internally with the $514 radian adac lower receiver. There are a grand total of ZERO oem lower receivers that allow this function. Most “ambi” receivers have a right side bolt release, and a left side mag release, but that’s it. Sure, you can get an LMT mars….but releasing the magazine, then pulling the ch back, will not lock the bolt back unless you switch positions to the right side bolt catch/release….but that would need to be trained for proficiency….whereas the radian adac allows mag release, dropping magazine, continue to hold mag release and pull back ch, locking the bolt back. The Redi-catch/release does this externally, and at a great price….while offering the best “through the trigger guard” right side bolt release on the market. By far, tighter and less obtrusive than magpul’s b.a.d. Lever and pmm’s as well! It was my very first upgrade. Then a wml for positive id….then grip and stock preferences, then trigger preferences. Then buffer knowledge and adjustable gas block for suppression. A sling for possession. And then train, and note which ammo she loves best.

I’m a first time rifle owner as of about 2 months ago and I was going through this same process of figuring out what can be junk and what needs to be quality I purposefully bought a smith and Wesson sport 3 that has a full top rail/m-lok hand guard out of the box so I could customize from the get go. I also bought a cheap reflex scope from Amazon but the more I use the red dot, the more I notice the cheapness like some left and right play in the red dot reticle when switching between reticle types and I noticed that not all of the reticles lined up to the same zero. So I’m looking to get the holosun 510c 3x magnifier combo,

I'd ditch the carry handle since your rail has QD points for a sling. And since this build is budget, get the older gen Magpul rear MBUS sight which will be cheaper. Now your back up sights will cowitness with the RDO by using the taller mount that came with it. Also, height over bore will be a lot less. To me this is a more solid option.

I would even take that one step further and leave the original stock and grip if the end goal is a usable platform on a budget. That was 80 dollars he didn't need to spend to make it better.

I would have started off with a different platform, I'm not a fan of the carry handle. I like the A2 front post though. I started off with an M&P 15 2.0 with the A2 front post, and Magpul rear flip. I put a Magpul handguard on the front, and a Romeo 5 dot. I'm in the market for a sling that doesn't suck, and am debating if I actually want a vertical grip or not. More important, I'm really just waiting to grab a flip over magnifier or breakdown and get a LPVO, probably the 1X6 from Sig Sauer. I'm not putting a light on my AR because it isn't my primary house gun, but I do have a Sig Foxtrot on my Glock 19 and it is, like the Romeo 5, good to go.

M16/M16A1 fixed stock and pistol grip are nice and cheap to get usually. A2 stock is ok as well but the LOP is a little long for most people.

A very cheep add on is the ERGO Gapper. it fits between the pistol grip and the trigger guard and saves your middle finger all for the low low price of about $5.

So much deal can be had on the second market. Could have found better options..slightly used stocks, pistol grips, or vertical grips. You can find deals from places like CDNN..and a few other places.

I prefer the Surefire G2X for a WML....$40 cheaper and no wires/pressure switch which I don't care for. Nice that the streamlight includes a mount though. Good list!

I like carry handles, but I would have to tweak it. You’ll won’t be taking it off in field. Consider weight of those fasteners, tap the hole and put cap screws in it to secure it to upper.

I think the most important thing you can do for a budget rifle is get a quality bolt carrier and lots of mags and ammo, the rest is personal preference how you want to run your rifle.

If you want budget I would've just bought a Magpul furniture kit. It comes with the grip, forend, stock, foregrip and a magazine for a pretty decent price. Then I would've gotten the mount and red dot you got.

At first I thought I'd like the stock but the longer I looked at it the more I'll spend the extra for a MOE SL-S $90. Also I got an adjustable, qd sling for $20 I'll try to find the link. Worth trying instead of the $12 one, still in budget

If you were going to keep the carry handle, I wouldn’t have put the Romeo on TOP of the carry handle, making the sight plane even higher. I would have put it on the rail in front of the carry handle and co-witnessed it with the sights. Not ideal, but better than putting your sight so high. What I did on MY rifle, is buy one of the LMT rear sights that is essentially a chopped down carry handle, put my Romeo in front of the rear sight where the “carry” part of the handle used to be, and co-witnessed everything, so that I actually look through the rear peep sight to look at my red dot, which is right in line with the front of my front post. It’s not as inexpensive as your solution, but I think it was worth the money.
