All true, but I still love mine. Its a beautiful machine, a delight to use. I use mine a lot on MW and its nearly flawless on FM. I do very little SSB listening but when I do it does not bother me. I am a fan of Sangean radios. The 405 is really good too.

A very fair review Gilles. I live in a rural setting and have better performance due to low noise conditions. Based on your great reviews and live chat, I bought both the Tecsun H-501x and the PL-330 and fully agree with your assessment in naming those sets as 2021 Best List picks. Thanks and Merry Christmas!

I like the fact that it uses AA rechargeables or alkaline , and like you said you can get them almost any where plus i am glad they fixed the pull up antenna and added airport freqs. i own a 909x and the big draw back is the pull up although i use a long wire . Thanks for your straight talk Gilles it gives me an informed opinion . see you Wednesday 73

For me, regular AA batteries are a must; it's something I love about my Sony ICF-SW7600GR.

Much appreciate your honest review, if someone does not like it, then they may not take your advise...it all depends what one wants to listen to. My take is, that Unquestionably Sangean 909x2 is a beautiful radio (I own a 909x) and one has to ask how much detailed precision one wants to look in SSB mode. By and large people use an external or Reel antenna for SWL and SSB listening. So, of the Whip if it is a little less sensitive (may be) then not sure anyone would mind as much. Tecsun has indeed improved their quality and are the pioneers now, they are at par with what used to be Japanese Radio makers like Sony and Panasonic in the 90s.

I love your channel and I'm 68, been doing this for many years!! I have the 909X and 909 X2. I like both, but I think the 909 X2 is superior, but not crazy about the volume issue on SSB. But rarely use SSB! However, that being said, I find then MUCH easier to use than my Tecsun PL880 and have had MAJOY quality issue with my Tecsun. The buttons don't always work and the on/off button is a major drawback. Sometimes to shut off, I have to remove battery!!?? Thanks!!

If the frequency display is not accurate, it's a serious problem. The accuracy is very easy to check with time stations in the U.S. and Canada; I can tell when a station is tuned "by ear."

Thanks for the review. I would have been VERY disappointed if I purchased one that was off frequency and bandwidth selection is pretty important. Not a cheap radio here in Australia.

Hello I just subscribed, on Craigslist a Sangean ATS 909 is advertised for $135. I can not find a review of the 909 anywhere or on Amazon. I see X and X2 models but NO plain old 909. Can you give me your opinion of a 909?... Thanks

i have a plain 909 via Radio Shack DX398. Put it in storage for about 10 years due to other things in life. Now getting back into Shortwave and SSB. i missed the big power house stations from around the world 10-20 years ago. Shortwave is still active and interesting, especially SSB. The DX398 via 909 plain, fire up and performed like time did not do any damage to the radio. The radio is the original no mods and served me when I was younger then and now. I recently bought a Tecsun PL330 a lightening deal on Amazon free prime delivery for $57.00. A no brainer for me. This radio is made for SSB. Sangean of the past, a very good radio and a right size modern Tecsun radio to use for each of there strengths. Don't upgrade to a Sangean 909x or 909 x2, great looking radio but it has so many issues I could not accept in a radio that expensive. Save your money even if you are a ham on the receiving end. Get a Tecsun PL 330 .There are many hacks built into the radio including soft mute reduction as a starter. Thanks.

I use this radio for AM and FM Dxing primarily, and I only use the telescopic antenna for FM, and internal for AM. For that use-case, it's a great radio, as I'm more interested in what a radio can pick up by itself (without external antenna help). The PL-880 has a better sound, if you want more bass, but I find it picks up fewer stations. It outperforms my CC Radio 3 (space is shared by a computer, so one radio may be affected by interference than another). My Skywave SSB has similar pull to the ATS-909x2. Nice to be able to explore other bands, and I like the AA battery setup. I use Eneloops in mine. Overall quite satisfied. Wish the twirly wheel was solid (not painted) for durability, and the volume knob was knurled or rubberized. A little harder to direct tune than the Skywave SSB, but pages easier to use than the PL-880.

Do you mean that Sangean 909X2 is more sensitive on medium wave than CC Radio 3 with its twin coil antenna?
