Norman Lear didn't like how powerful and popular James was. James has an issue with how the show was full of negative stereotypes and demanded a change. So they fired him. After that the show took a deep fall no matter the effort they took to fill the void. Florida left for two seasons for the same reasons, the negative stereotypes.
