The most hated of something often becomes the most desirable after an era has passed. Rolex Daytona and the AP Royal Oak in the watch world, 72 challenger and Porsche 924 in the car world. The 996 will be a future collectible, mark my word.

I have a 2001 Carrera 4, and I like the look of the front, but simply, the appearance from behind the wheel is what matters, as well as the distinct sound of the engine mechanics inside the car... you are right to make your decisions for selling ypurs, I waited nearly 40 years for mine, am happy with my 996, wish I had bought either the 911 2.7 or the Ferrari Dino (each was for sale for £5000) in 1983...

In march 2002, I purchased a new 996 Targa and still enjoy it as much today as I did then. been super reliable and still looks new. I changed out the IMS bearing last year just to be safe but looking back, not sure it was needed. My 2022 992 Targa GTS is set to arrive this week. Love the brand. Great video!

I bought the very same car 3 years ago as a fun car. Turned into a daily driver and have no plans to ever sell it. These early 996’s with the throttle cable hit the sweet spot of being modern and dependable but still light and analog driving experience.

Good for you, young man. I was a 996 "hater," but I am reconsidering that position. I recall there was a time when 1980's PCs weren't worth anything, and now they're very expensive. I personally think the 996 looks kind of like the 928 had a baby with a 994 (or other traditional 911), and, when I think of it like that, I really want one.

I don’t know that I’d call the 996 a “grand tourer”, especially compared to the 991 and 992. I used to hate the ugly duckling 996, but I’ve come around to it in the last 2-3 years or so. It has its place. I’m told the early ones like you have/had are really special with the throttle cable and analog”ness”. I own a 997, and I think it’s second only to the 964 in aesthetics, but a 996 C4S is something to behold. If you can address the IMS (which isn’t a big deal, especially compared to the…->) and bore scoring, then it’s probably a damned good car. Factor in the price these “used to” go for and it’s a sweet deal. They are finally getting their due, and that’s good. I think a 996 with a Metzger (Turbo or GT car) is probably a freak experience.

I also have a 1999 996S It 's IMS bearing I had replaced at 3,7000 miles in 2012. The car now has 50,000 miles on it. My advice to you is, keep it and buy a daily driver!

I’m currently saving up for a 996/997. At first I said I was going to wait longer and just get a 997 but I’ve watched a lot of 996 ownership videos and owners seem to love them so I think I’ll be getting a 996 hopefully next year.

Just purchased a 2001 996.2 and I find myself taking the long 55 minute commute through winding back roads home versus the short 25min commute from the Freeway. I have a coffee shop in Redmond, WA, nearby Seattle (sorta like a 40min commute). It's been the most enjoyable car I've owned. :)

That is so nice! And I am in Bellevue so I would love to drop by your shop, I am a huge fan of coffee. Sadly most of my commuting is Bellevue to Seattle, so just boring highways and traffic. So I ride my bike rather than drive, and often would take out my Mini instead for fun drives. You are doing it the right way!

Like this Content... Not sure if it is a mistake to sell it, you need to know and decide. I had a 996.2, the engine failed on that one unfortunately, so I sold it. Right now I am thinking of maybe buying one again. Stupid, isnt it? I dont think so. I will buy considerable lower milage car this time (if I decide to go with a 996 again) and if the engine fails again (which would be a buttload of bad luck I guess...), I will just rebuild it. There are some shops here who are doing a good job on that. I just did not consider that on my 996 because the mileage was too high in my point of view. At the moment I did not yet decide if it will be 996 again... I also like the F-Type a lot and an R8 could also be an option. Best wishes from my side to you!

Yep, that is my worry. I have had 0 issues with this car, but worry about the same. I can't reasonably afford a new engine right now, so someday I will get another that is rebuilt (maybe a Jake Raby car) and then not even worry!

Did you have any issues fitting the roof rack to the car? I also have a '99 and I couldn't install an OEM rack because Porsche painted over the mounting screws from the factory. This is a known issue for the '99s. The best advice I found on Rennlist was to replace the four mounting brackets. I ended up selling the rack because it wasn't worth the expense and hassle to replace the hardware.
@benbomcars
Жыл бұрын
I absolutely had issues with that! Mine had problems (probably the same as yours) due to galvanic corrosion. The rack mounts are aluminum while the screws in them on the '99 are steel, and they meld together. I had to take most of the upper interior trim out and replace the mounts. It took me the good part of a day, but was not a difficult DIY. Once it was replaced, they have been perfect!

1) You will not find anything more meaningful! Some could claim that a motorcycle could do it but it did not do that for me. I enjoy more my 996 than my K1300R. 2) ”Many hate” the lights for their shape - which I find non-related to what Porsche really is for. But seriously the lights are actually quite bad light power-wise unless you have the Litronic-version. Both the power and the beam shape are lousy in the halogen versions. I think this goes for all the 911 prior 997. That is really a problem if you want to drive in the dark and in the country side/forest B-roads with lots of animals. My experience is from the EU-beam shape but I know it is not too different from the US beam. The light for slow 2nd gear left hand corner insides is just inadequate as well for animals crossing the road from left. 3) My experience of the 996 is otherwise positive. It is an excellent value for money solution - especially for someone who likes to maintain (love) his car with his own hands. You can really see the racing history in the ease of maintenance compared to say Audi or VW which are pretty much made only for factory line assembly in mind. And of course, truism, the 911 is just so fun car handling: excellent steering, good feel, plenty of traction, from 993 onwards you can trail brake them up to a point and there is enough well controllable power to enjoy, good visibility, seating not too low frog perspective like in some other cars (Z4, Vette, Ferraris). Easy car to drive up to the limit. Ive only spun mine once with summer tyres on snow. Winter tyres on snow - fantastic as in the summer.
