They absolutely saw the direction we were heading. I was 17 when this song came out so I was aware of my surroundings & can say technology was not a huge part of our world. Credit cards not nearly as common some places wouldn’t take them on small purchases & sometimes still ran manually through boxy device that made a ditto copy & was MAILED to be processed & paid. Bank cards to access ATMs were top tech. Tape players will still standard in cars & home radios. Cameras recording 24/7 were not common & mostly only found inside larger dept & discount stores to monitor for shoplifters. I still remember being able to put gas in my car BEFORE paying!I can’t lie, I put gas in my car & drove off on numerous occasions & never once did anything happen- I’m sure there were no outdoor cameras. Cell phones were basically non existent. My aunt had a car phone & that was SO cool😂. The internet was a non factor. I remember my aunt in DC showing me how email worked at job & my mind was 🤯 My point is for them to understand & anticipate what was going to happen is incredibly inciteful considering things were still relatively simple & tech still had a ways to go before it became widespread & affordable to most people. Read the book of ‘ The Handmaids tale’. It was written in 1985 & set in the future. One of the craziest parts is about money. The story has all women loosing control of their lives & this is achieved because their money is gone. The story explains that paper money no longer exist & that all money is in accounts. No one ever sees their money as it just a concept & and it doesn’t exist outside of an account balance. SOUND FAMILIAR? The extreme conservatives who take over the government freeze all amounts belonging to women & they loose all power & become reliant on men.
