Great video, really clearly presented with balanced comments and detail. I’ve used both Goodnotes and Notability for years and as you said in the video they both have strengths and weaknesses. A couple of points not mentioned in the video: The major one is file size. Goodnotes files are HUGE about 10-20x that of Notability. If you accumulate 1000s of notes over the years, as I have, Goodnotes will take up a lot of space on your IPad. Notability for me takes up 5GB for around 2,000 notes, this would be at least 50GB to store the same in Goodnotes. Not a big consideration if you have a 256GB IPad but a big factor if you use a 32/64GB version. Notability is freemium with an annual subscription required for full feature set. Goodnotes has never historically been a one-time purchase as they released each new version as a paid app (hence Goodnotes 5) whereas Notability gave all upgrades included in the initial app purchase. My view is that either app will cost less than buying a single Moleskin notebook per year so both represent great value. Goodnotes will cost a lot more in IPad storage space over the longer term if you don’t want to archive old notes. I do like Goodnotes templates but only use it for times when those are useful and use Notability for everything else. Keep up the great work and good luck building your channel.

Really good points on everything! Notability changed to the freemium model a month or two after the release of this video, so it was a shame my video got outdated so quick. Storage wise you have a lot more experience than me and I would take your word for it. It's also not too big of a problem if you're using iCloud storage, but it is definitely something to consider. Thank you for this comment! I hearted it so that more people can see when they watch my video.

@@Everyview Unfortunately both apps only use ICloud to sync the data, it doesn’t reduce the storage space consumed unless you archive notes off into ICloud and remove them from Goodnotes or Notability. Doing this means you lose the ability to search all your notes in one place, which for me is one of the main benefits these apps have over a conventional paper notebook. Thank you for the heart.

Why though? Its still way cheaper than goodnotes in the long run. Notability works great with non apple products. You can simply buy a graphics tablet for like 30$ and do digital note taking in Notability if you have an iMac/macbook. I mean there are people that literally buy an iPad just for note taking! I'd have to have this subscription for Notability for a decade to even pay around the same amount that others pay for the apple pencil alone. If you have money for an apple pencil and an iPad, you have the 1$ a month for an app that you use nearly daily easily. Besides you can also use Notability for free and the only thing you lose is math handwriting to text which is a feature not everyone needs.
@oliwaaa7982

@@ducklingscap897 If you pay 1$ per month, it will eventually cost more than goodnotes, for which you only have to pay 8$ once, right? And not every cheaper pen works on notability because not every pen has hand palm rejection. Also those pens break quickly, if you drop them 1 time from something that is not even that high, it will no longer work properly. so I understand that people would rather buy an expensive pen that they can use for a long time, than a pen that costs $ 30 but breaks faster.

One thing you missed out on is that Notability can change the fill of a shape. Actually you change both the fill and the stroke color (tap on the shape and choose style, there you'll find both style and stroke color settings), which is not possible on Goodnotes.

Huge feature that is only available in Notability is the ability to password protect the app or individual notebooks. This is a massive differentiator - I've preferred Goodnotes on so many levels (UX, UI, template choice etc) but they have always refused to add this feature - despite the fact that so many people need to make notes private for GDPR and privacy purposes. If only Goodnotes would add this feature I'd use it in a blink, but I just can't without it.

Excellent work! You put a lot of effort into this and it shows! You convinced me to give Goodnotes a try after using Notability for so long. A couple of questions as a Goodnotes new user: Is there a way to have the paper automatically show a page width view like in Notability? And is there a way to have the text default to a specific size? My font size keeps going to size 24 which is larger than I'd typically like. There doesn't seem to be a bullet points in Goodnotes like in Notability either.

I think after many many year the best note - taking is Samsung notes for Samsung/ Android (till Samsung stop that). This App combines the pros from good notes and notability and many more. On both Platforms Noteshelf is also better than NB and GN but there is a huge issue with the apple pen 1. Gen. - The Latency is horrible. GN and NB are not perfect. With GN it is the best zoombox experience but papers are too tiny and by NB the Zoom Box fucks me up ! Bute Huge Pros are the handwritten recognition and the voice recorder. The Line Adjustment for Paper sheets is also very good in NB.

How well do typing, bullet points, and text boxes work with each? I prefer to type some notes and write others depending on the subject. Also, does notability allow you to add a grid in between your document for just one page or a small area, leaving the rest of it plain white? Finally, do either apps allow u to edit or markup pdfs?

Notability has one page template for the entire document. You can put a post-it on a page and this can have its own paper style which achieves what you want albeit a bit long winded. Goodnotes allows you to change the template for each page individually which is more elegant.
