I want this! I need this! I hope Google makes this available in Europe soon (Norway). Thank you for the demonstration.

I can see the value of owning several, myself. I've got game consoles and set-top boxes for internet connected things, but nothing that ties them together. A few of these $35 sticks and I can move whatever I'm watching to any TV in the house with the click of a button on a phone/tablet.

That didn't take you long. Cool. Looks good. Can't wait to get mine. BTW, I went ahead and bought the Nexus 7 at Staples. I'll bring it in Monday and let you play with it.

Could even be very handy for use at a hotel, if it has HDMI on the tv. I've got a Roku as well (Roku 2, older model), and I can see myself using this much more often. Just a matter of convenience, since I can find what I want on my laptop/tablet/phone and push it to the TV.

It's been really interesting so far. If I can work it out, I'm actually going to make a video about it pretty soon that should be somewhat entertaining.

It's definitely not a 100% replacement for anything. In my case, since my TV supports CEC HDMI, it auto-switches from my cable box, or blu ray player, or Xbox, over to Chromecast whenever I push content to it. In the same way, if I turned on another device, it should immediately swap over to that one, so it's more dependent on the devices taking control than one device controlling everything.

Thanks for the review, Jordan. I have a Logitech Revue which, while a bit slow, does work pretty well.

Thanks for the review, Jordan. I have a Logitech Revue which, while a bit slow, does work pretty well.. This looks like it's faster. My TV is 6 years pld, so no wifi/ethernet connection. Will definately grab one of these. Thanks again.

My turnaround time is pretty fast on video making at this point. Can't wait to check out the Nexus 7! I saw them assembling the display for it when I stopped by on my way home earlier. Couldn't justify the purchase though.

About the heft of the device, iFixit found out that was due to the ginormous honkin' heatsink attached to the PCB, probably due to the incredible amount of processing necessary for realtime video decoding.

This sounds great for my roommate and I. We used to stream Netflix over the wii, but a different roommate moved. There is a nexus 7 in the house and if we could stream netflix again it would be a Huge +. We were thinking of getting an android stick, but the cost of one is a little bit too high.

Quick update: Works through the Chromecast Chrome extension and the KZitem player. I can't test it with Netflix on Ubuntu, obviously, but as I come up with more usages for Linux, I'll compile the list and include it in the review. :)

Hey Jordan, I'm having an issue connecting the Chromecast to my PC. When i boot up the Chromecast app, it tells me that my Wi-Fi is turned off. The problem is that my PC doesn't have Wi-Fi (it uses a wired connection). So how do I use my chromecast on my PC! It works on my GS4

it MIGHT work over campus wifi, but I read earlier that it doesn't work if you use AP isolation mode, which a lot of colleges do, so it might not work at all. The additional issue comes when your dorm-mates find out about it and randomly send you porn at all hours of the day/night.

I would consider it ironic that you cant get Linux to work on Linux but considering Google does this quite often, I am not surprised. Cute gadget but I wont think of it again after tomorrow because Waiting for Godot or for Waiting For Google Linux Support is really the same.

Great video! Can you address how to secure the chromecast? I cannot find any settings to do this. When I bought the chromecast this issue I did not think of assuming the chromecast would be secured within in the wifi router since it was using my wifi. This is not the case, my neighbors and visitors to my home can access my chromecast. It appears in the wifi listings as an unsecured wifi spot. I take the chromecast out of the hdmi port when not using, but when I use I am worried. I just purchased the chromecast but am thinking of sending it back just because of this issue. What a shame and how stupid of Google. Hopefully I am just missing something, is there a way to secure the chromecast?

Most NEW TV's, smart tv's often depend on the manufacturer for any software updates, as such they become practically useless after 6 months to a year when the manufacturer stops updating, not to mention they're overpriced. Why get a new smartTV when you can have this for $35 and use it on practically any modern TV? This is a cheap dongle that will be constantly updated and gaining support for years to come, especially if they add DLNA support, the skies will be the limit with this.
