I would love to listen to your thoughts regarding font pairing, how to choose a complimentary font after selecting your primary font. Thank you.
@n8mo
2 жыл бұрын
I’d like to second this. I find myself falling into a (likely poor) habit of simply choosing one serif and one sans-serif font for whatever I’m designing. I’m rubbish at picking two well-paired fonts otherwise.

Many Google Fonts are not made for free. Someone else paid for them, and also decided to make them available for free. A notable example is Fira Sans.
@JoshColletta
2 жыл бұрын
I don't know where you got your information about Fira Sans, but that is incorrect. Fira Sans is part of the Fira typeface that was designed for Mozilla. It was originally issued under the Apache License, and was later re-issued under the SIL Open Fonts License. Both Apache and SIL allow for free distribution, use, and modification under their respective terms. The Fira font family has never been distributed under a strictly commercial license.
@relatakera5249

@@JoshColletta I meant that a company pays talented type designers to design a typeface and then makes that typeface available for free. My point is that Google fonts don't suck, many of them are pretty good.

If you wanna be a good product designer, then your opinions and preferences should be out the window. What matter is how you empathize with the people using your creations, and those people have their own biases and opinions about stuff. What we like doesnt matter if you want to be a good designer of products that people will actually use.

I've just this evening finished a client site with inter. I used bold for headlines and regular for text. But, at each size I changed the letter spacing. Pulling inter in like you did there makes it a much better font, but the same letter spacing doesn't work across all weights and sizes. You need to do a bit of work to get it right.

Google fonts are not all bad. It's just that the library is so big that it takes some time to find good fonts. However, you can get the most awkward font from there or dafont and turn it into a very good base for a brand. It all depends on how good the designer is with type setting.

Few notes. I mostly agree with everything here. Quality fonts aren't rare from what everyone sees, since the largest companies of the world use expensive fonts. Everywhere you look, you'll see either helvetica, guardian, or something similar from large brands. Large brands are what is blasted everywhere. So there's nothing rare about it. However, visibility of a small business brand advertising is quite rare. They simply can't afford the amount of capital that fortune 500 companies can. Since visibility of a business advertising is rare, they can't invest into spending top dollar for licensing fonts. That's why Google Fonts are totally fine. A lot of companies funnel an obscene amount of capital into their brand identities. What do they gain for it? They use brand identity to cover up the fact that they have a terrible product to start with.

Wow, it's awkward. The tittle of the video sucks (it's 100% clickbait) but the content of the video is truly good, it opened my eyes at analyzing fonts in particular ways. As a Data Viz Designer, Google Fonts has a lot of good fonts (in a view of data viz needs), but i agree with the fact that most google fonts are not that great for web/graphic design.

Metrical kerning is customized by the typeface designer; optical is an algorithm in the design software, and it nearly always looks worse (as in your Inter example). A lot of free fonts are bad, but graphic design has very different needs than typesetting, which isn’t really discussed here. Expensive typefaces can be very hard to use well in book design.

Raleway is my favourite - it's a clone of Gotham, but I can't afford Gotham....Spectral SC for small caps, SC typefaces are getting way better - to match my art portfolio hand stamped letter set (the headline is a John Bull style block set from Flying Tiger which I like, very Century New Book/Garamond), I used to have to convert my own! Also recently Source Serif Pro via a Wordpress theme, it's a very usable body copy typeface for those of us who like old/book serif typefaces.

Also, see how Google fonts are sloppy. For example, Roboto Slab. Look at the construction of the letters G, R, K. Or the Montserrat font - look at the letters how messy they are made of non-welded elements. Try converting the Playfair Display font to an outline. It is simply a tragedy. Sloppy and amateurish.
