Im glad you posted this. I had the same thought when i saw those lovely mounds this spring. They were covered in clover and looked perfect for planting. Natures underground tractors, they need food too. Ill just have to plant extra this year.

I thought they were beavers on dry land that came from floods but survived. Beavers have a paddle tail .

Feel bad now for killing that groundhog. Little bastard destroyed our Melons this year and was messing up the parsley/cilantro patch. We tried smoke bombs in their holes, pepper based granular repellent, and garlic spray. Our soil is exactly the environment you described, just dry and hard enough for tunnels to not collapse with alot of compaction. Not sure what to do about it next year...
