Believe both those fish were attempting to gulp air to increase buoyancy into their swim bladder to counteract weight, but couldn't get enough. Would be good to attach a small bladder to the go-pro to make it closer to neutral. Might get better result.

Best way to catch gar isnt with hooks, its with a simple raggedy peice of rope - no hooks, their teeth get stuck in the rope and theres no need for a hook, they stay attatched to the rope! The rope just looks like a fish swimming through the water. :) awesome video Micah!

Worse, because the water creates alot more resistance than air does. That poor fish was already taxed from being caught. I would imagine that you figured on strapping that gopro on tighter the second time. This has to restrict blood flow. Less blood flow means less oxygen, less oxygen = rapid exhaustion. You need to try this with a shark or killer whale or something.

Gar are not invasive and they don’t have a measurable impact on the other fish populations. They are not bad fish, they are prehistoric and have likely been around longer then the game fish we traditionally go after. Don’t kill them just to kill them. Either eat them or release them.

Love this! Such a chill day of experimenting with making it compulsory to be a substitute camera man for you if you are a Gar and are caught by you. Clearly the gar are ridiculously plentiful there, so I assume they must be like Pikeminnows are to us up here in the Northwest. I LOVE how naturally curious all the different fish were and are of the Camera, too! Seeing all of them congregate and check in with the Gar, and investigating the Camera is epic! Super interesting to see how curious they all are. It also shows how social Gar are, as they don't really school, but anytime there's some excitement, they all join in on it. Thanks for the inspiration to start making my own content, and sharing your awesome experiences with us, Micah!

Your gar cam is a revelation in fishing technology. A couple of thoughts I had. I think that the GoPro camera might be a little heavy for the gar. For gar, you can wait for them to start feeding on the surface and cast out a small bass popper or jerkbait. Needs small trebles especially on the rear and you can hook up quite often with them. Those small trebles will punch through the beak and usually get a good hold. Also are you under the impression that braid is better for toothy critters? Mono and Flouro are way better as far as not being cut.

I think the reason the Gar you successfully kept the gopro attached to both sank to the bottom and rested there could have been because the strap was too tight and it compressed their swim bladders. if you look at the first one you released after getting the camera back, there's a pretty noticeable dent in its body from where the strap was tightened in place. The reason this might cause issues outside of the normal swim bladder function is that Gar use their swim bladders as a kind of primitive lung (see them swimming to the surface after getting the camera strapped onto them in both fish). So what I think is happening is a combination of them not being able to completely fill their swim bladder/ regulate it properly, and potentially them just being "out of breath" as it were because their "lung" capacity is being restricted. I could be totally wrong, as I'm not an expert, but I wouldn't be surprised if I was right. either way, it was a cool idea, and you got some interesting footage from it!
