Goran Dragic. NBA Most Improved Player in 2014. All-NBA Third Team. FIBA EuroBasket Champion in 2017. FIBA EuroBasket MVP. 2017 was Goran Dragic’s year. The Miami Heat rallied from a 11-30 slog of a start and finished the season a scintillating 30-11, and came one Brooklyn Nets tank job away from making the playoffs following their historic turnaround. Then Goran announced that he was going to retire from international competition following EuroBasket 2017. While there, Slovenia capped off an undefeated run through the tournament by beating 2013 champion France in pool play, the 2015 champion Spain in the knockout stages, and the reigning Olympic silver medalist Serbia in the final game. The Miami Heat and the Slovenian national team showed that opponents should not dare to overlook a team with Goran on it. He has the heart of a lion, and lives to attack. They call him the dragon because defenses dread the way he drains them of their energy with his relentless driving to the basket. Dragic dazzles as he darts and dashes, daring defenders to defy his progress to the rim. If they jump on any of his myriad moves, he manuevers masterfully, making them mistime their jumps as he jukes every which way. His footwork is phenomenal and Dragic leaves defenders dizzied and dazed.
This video was originally going to be solely about his footwork, but as I continued to collect film, his ability to scorch the net with the many different aspects of his game stood out to me. His game is equal parts Steve Nash and Allen Iverson (cited as his idols). A sprinkling of Dwyane Wade, James Harden, and Manu Ginobili. He’s seems frenetic in his forays to the rim, but the truth is that he’s so fully in control most of the time that it helps him be absolutely fearless when he attacks.
P.S. I didn’t know how to end it, so I capped it off with his some of his best plays from the 15/16 season. Enjoy!
