Featuring:
Mike Rocha, trumpet
The album’s title track is a fusion of jazz and classical values, compositionally speaking, and shows the band’s versatility well. There are so many high points for me, but I need to call out Jay Mason on the bass clarinet - just listen to him nail that stuff at the beginning! The chart has some interesting colors in it, including harpsichord, vibes and accordion, the latter skillfully performed by Mike Watts.
You may also notice we added a string section to this track! I wonder how much that would cost to take on the road?
We eventually settle into a swing feel, where we hear a wonderfully constructed trumpet solo by Mike Rocha. Mike plays a well-paced and patient solo, utilizing his great sound and chops.
The term “Gordian Knot” is often used as a metaphor for an intractable and complex problem, kind of like running a big band!
This piece, with all of its frenetic activity, was written to represent a complex musical puzzle, but with all the parts fitting together in a seamless manner. As we recorded this piece, I was in awe of how the band tackled the challenge. The chart builds and builds until Wayne Bergeron’s dynamic high notes put the final punctuation on what I think is one of the Phat Band’s best performances.
