A number of years ago. My Dad was gone by then, but at the reception after the funeral for his best friend from World War 2 I used some lines from this song in a toast. Friend was retired from a railroad in Ohio state. The toast I made was. Over the mountains, over the planes, into the muskeg, into the rain, up the St Lawrence all the way to Gaspe. A drink with the living, and a toast to the dead. Canadian National. The railroaders there that got it went totally wild with tears and cheers.

This is an iconic song done by a Canadian Icon. In spite of his age, he has been invited to appear at Canada's sesquicentenial (150 year anniversary) celebration on July 1st. I hope he will do this song again like he did for the Centennial in 1967.

"liven' on stew and drinkin' bad whisky".... what a great line!... I can't believe you could write that if you hadn't actually lived it... one wonders...

Assuming my plans will get off the table; so to speak, I will be performing a Full Set as a Tribute to Gordon Lightfoot in an Outdoor Concert this Summer in the Owen Sound District.

Put on some earbuds and listen to Red Shea playing lead guitar. His ability/creativity is just unbelievable.

BEST version of one of the all-time greatest. Pay no attention to stringy, overproduced studio efforts. Also, the closing applause continues much longer than on original. Imagine your hometown NHL team scoring a second goal before the first one has been announced on the PA. It gets louder and more appreciative and cooler to be a part of, eh?

It always seems to happen in concerts. Ruins the opening of the song.
