I saw Gordon Lightfoot in concert 12 times and have listened to his music for over 50 years and love him. Rest in Peace Gordon, miss you and love you. ❤❤

FYI: Up here in Canada Gordie is a legend and there is nothing better than listening to him on a nice sunny early morning sitting on the dock at the cottage with him on in the background.... It is as close to nirvana as you can get !!!!

Absolute classic...another is:"The Last Time I Saw Her Face", brilliantly written and performed by Gordon. This song is extremely emotional, and hard-hitting. In my opinion, one of his best of all time.

The early to mid 70s, had all of these great solo artists. Croce, and Lightfoot, were great storytellers, and then you had Elton John, and even some of the female artists like Carol King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon and Linda Ronstadt. The 70s was just overflowing with great music, and it was all genres. Even Country and Western with Glenn Campbell, and Roy Clark and Charlie Pride etc. We were spoiled from 70s music man. Thank you.

You had the same reaction that most of us did when we first heard this vocal and musical masterpeice, just perfection and a heartfelt sadness for a lost love..."the feelings gone and I just can't get it back".

4:20 “I’m just trying to understand all the feelings that YOU lack” After his daughter grew up, she confronted Gordon Lightfoot about that lyric. Saying “Mom’s not the only reason your marriage failed. You share half the blame.” He agreed, and began singing it “The feelings that WE lack.”

And his daughter was being diplomatic; Gordon later made it clear that he saw other women when he was touring and was struggling with alcoholism, so the feelings that his wife lacked were not doubt a product of how he had treated her and their marriage. Good on their daughter to set him straight, and good on Gordon for learning to accept his own failings.

That was one of Gord’s most personal songs…..about the breakup of his first marriage. Geordie has a very deep rabbit hole. Bob Dylan considered Gord one of his favourite songwriters. His songs have been covered by loads of artists. Johnny Cash, Glen Campbell, Elvis, Barbra Streisand and more. If you get around to listening to “ Sundown “ it’s about the girl who broke up his first marriage.

I had a Canadian roommate in grad school. He had only heard of Gordon Lightfoot as "that drunk musician", but listening to my albums made him a lifelong fan. What a treasure, and what a perfect song. So few reactors catch the sheer viciousness of the lyrics... "Just like a paperback novel, the kind the drugstores sell." Ouch.

Lightfoot was also cherished by his peers, many of who recorded more than one of his songs. Bob Dylan, for example, has been quoted as saying that Lightfoot died “without ever having made a bad song”, adding that every time he listened to one of them, he “wished it would last forever."

This song has been covered 200 times, including by Barbara Streisand, Glen Campbell, Johnny Mathis, Olivia Newton-John, Liza Minnelli, Johnny Cash, and Neil Young. It was also ripped off by the man who wrote Whitney Houston's hit, the Greatest Love of All. Light foot sued and had the composer, Michael Masser, dead to rights to the tune of 24 copied bars, but he decided to settle for an apology when it appeared that Houston was taking the brunt of it.
