I bumped into Gordon a couple of years ago in downtown Toronto. We chatted for about 15 minutes and as hard as I tried to talk about HIM and his music, he kept turning the conversation spotlight on ME - where I'm from, where I work, etc. I walked away chuckling at how easily he deflected the attention away from himself. On the Lower East Side of NYC in 1971 I heard this song for the first time. Thanks for refreshing my memory of how it went through me then like a revelation of beauty and romance and exquisitely beautiful heartache--and nothing's changed. It still does. They play it in stores sometimes now and every time I hear it I'm pulled into its magic. Some other boomer talking about or playing this wouldn't have had the same effect as seeing it appreciated by a young black man. I was hearing it differently too. For the first time I heard Johnny Mathis, such a pretty voice such a crooner, Lightfoot too.

I've seen him in concert twice, once in the late 70's and again in the early 00's. The first time was in symphony hall and the acoustics were so good you could hear him tap his foot at times. When he sang this song, I bawled the entire time because I'd just come off a long-term relationship and the guy could've written those words. Hearing him sing it again decades later, he sounded just the same. His songs have been a background track for my life. Any song from Gord's Gold is, indeed, gold.

Music is THE great communicator. You hear John belting out " Twist and Shout, " you feel like dancing. You hear Stevie singing, " I WISH, " you feel like moving. The common denominator is feeling. It's only the great songwriters who can reach inside your heart and squeeze the sadness out. Lightfoot was one. His gentle voice and profound lyrics immediately touch you, pulling you into a story we all share...lost love. Few songs can convey that desperate pain, that cruel emotion, that truth of an aching soul like this one. Brilliant and unforgettable!

This was the album that launched Gordon Lightfoot's career as a pop music star. He had been mostly a small club venue artist. The album was originally titled "Sit Down Young Stranger" which was another track on the LP. It was quickly changed to "If You Can Read My Mind". I still have my copy that I bought in 1970-71 when I was in California in the Navy. I live in Florida now. This is such a clean well recorded song.
