The inmate whose execution Gordon Parks witnessed was named Thomas Johnston. Johnston, aged 25, was from Sacramento, where he worked as an embalmer in a funeral home. Apparently Johnson had a fascination with collecting sharp knives. He was convicted of the 1956 murder of 7 year old Ronald Wendorf in the restroom of a Sacramento movie theater, whom Johnston decided to attack at random to experience a 'thrill killing'. Johnston died in the gas chamber on June 28, 1957.
