A Goshawk and black bear share the same "bath" in a high elevation spring in the Mission Mountains in the Swan Valley. A natural spring in an area without an abundance of standing water (lakes, ponds, etc.) can attract a myriad of species. Knowing this, we keep a camera on this site permanently.
Birds take these "baths" as a way to keep their feathers in optimal condition by removing dirt, debris, and bacteria/parasites/etc. This behavior is why manmade birdbaths are successful in increases bird-watching opportunities.
Both black and grizzly bears use baths, affectionately termed “bear baths,” which aid in temperature regulation in the hot summer months.
Footage captured by Luke Lamar.
