Great to see more Malazan content on the 'tube. Looking at Malazan (the main 10) as a bit of a mistery novel is very useful. One starts to make questions and try to figure them out ( Like who are these two shady guys in robes that leads these superpoweful Hounds? Ammanas and Cotillion? Isn't Cotillion the name of a Dance? Why would they want to strike the heart of The malazan mainland?). Hopefully this becomes a motivation to push forward until one has a more wide knowledge on what is actually happening in the series ( Around MoI I would say). Also, The author does through the reader in the middle of the action/world with little explanation. But he is very conscious of it. One doesn't need to remember every name, every character's role and every political implication from the first time they appear/are mentioned. If something is important, it will come back later, and more often than not with some additional context spoken by some other character. Some stuff are explicitly stated by characters one or two books later. So things do eventually become more clear.

This is great-I totally agree. You’re kind of learning the world together with the characters who also have either false, or vastly incomplete information, so it ends up being a journey for everyone!

I think the author actually explains his choices for the first book in the preface. He kind of feels like spending half a book explaining the world is a waste of time and expects the reader to pay some attention instead, even if some readers would not be able to get into it. He had a lot of trouble selling his book to publishers too. This idea of throwing the reader into the deep sets the tone for many first-time readers and you'll find most reviews talk about how 'difficult' or 'complex' it is. The whole series certainly requires careful reading and the world building is complex, but this first book really is a conscious exaggeration on that.

It seems alot of people drop the series because of the chaos and confusion of this first book even though its a great book. Though the import of certain things from here are only revealed many books later therefore it is a book that gets better as you get further into the series and definitly is one that requires re-reading to fully catch everything
@IskarJarak
4 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I totally get the confusion and also the jumping around in MoI and DG and then introducing a bunch of new cast in HoC, it can be a little jarring, but this one is meant to be reread often so you can mine all those little gems when you go back and aren’t so focused on finding out what is going to happen!
