We do a fair amount of driving trips, and packing food for on the road is a real hassle when you need to use ice packs. We decided to invest in the Koolatron P75 12 volt Thermoelectric Cooler/Warmer. So that we could use it inside the home as well, we purchased Koolatron’s optional multi-purpose power adapter that converts 110-120V AC to 12V DC. This allows us to “pre-cool” the unit and pack it in the house, then move it into the truck and plug it in.
The Koolatron thermelectric cooler/warmer works because of the Peltier Effect. When you pass current through joined plates or junctions of dissimilar metals (such as copper or aluminum), heat is either emitted or absorbed at the junction depending on the order of the two metals the current is flowing through. For the geeks among us, this happens to balance the difference of the “chemical potential” of the two different metals.
So, depending on which way you send the current through the joined metals, you will either generate heat or cool. This is why this type of cooler/warmer works simply by reversing the plug sides when powering up the unit. One way, you get a cooler, the other way, you get a warmer. Koolatron uses a simple reversible plug with a red dot on one side, and a blue one on the other. Line us which one you want with the indicator arrow to place the unit into cooling or heating mode.
Koolatron indicates that cooling mode can be used indefinitely, while the warming mode is recommended for only a few hours at a time. Thermoelectric devices produce significantly less cold than compressor-driven refrigerators. Even so, thermoelectric devices are used to cool CPUs in computers, portable coolers, wine cellars, and even some types of electronic detectors.
The Koolatron unit, and others like it, are not heaters or refrigerators in the truest sense. In heat mode, they will help keep warm food warm, but they will not take cold food and warm it up. So, a good use is to use the warm mode, and transport already warm food to a social gathering.
The same for cooling. It’s best to put pre-chilled food or beverages into the unit, and it will keep them cold. The inside of the unit will achieve about 40 to 45°F (22-25°C), so frozen items won’t stay frozen, but they will stay cold for quite a long time.
We’ve found that we use the unit MUCH more to keep food cold. When we travel, having cold water and sodas, as well as cheese, fruit, sandwich meats and condiments is REALLY handy - all the while with no hassling with ice.
You can purchase thermoelectric coolers from a variety of sources online. There are various brands. We’ve been pleased with the Koolatron’s functionality and quality. We purchased our unit (it was not provided), along with an AC adapter for household use.
