I actually use that phrase, as a PHEV owner. My Prius Prime holds 11.something gallons of gasoline (10 usable if you don't want an ulcer with it telling you the tank is at zero) and 1/2 gallon of electricity. Every night that I plug it in, I "make a half gallon" for the price of 6.6 kWh. If I drive it in a manner to get 50mpg on gas (driving terribly, or going a steady 72mph) then I can go 25 miles without the engine coming on. If I drive to get 70mpg (driving very well, or going a steady 52mph) then I can go 35 miles on the electricity.
@solandri69
4 ай бұрын
@@MrBlueBurd0451 That's basically what MPGe represents (miles per gallon equivalent) in the EPA website for gas mileage. No conversion losses though. It's a raw joules-to-joules conversion. Because different regions get their electricity from different sources, it's impossible to predict what conversion losses are involved when generating the electricity. So it's not exactly a fair comparison with gasoline. But the point of the mileage ratings is to provide a common base for comparison between cars (or EVs in this case). So the conversion losses don't matter (unless you're comparing an EV to to a gas vehicle).

Avis and Budget have the same parent company and my husband’s company has a corporate deal with Avis (specifically). He can rent for family and for personal use with a similar rate, and it’s super helpful for us. A few years ago we were on Hawaii Island (aka Big Island) and when we went to return the rental to Avis, that side was closed, with a sign indicating to return it to the Budget side. We did, and the attendant walked around the car, checked the mileage, and handed us the receipt. We of course double-checked with him that we were supposed to returnit to Budget since Avis was closed, and he said yup, you’re all set. 2 days or so after we got home we got a notice (can’t remember if it was a phone call or email) that we hadn’t returned the car. My husband called Avis, spoke with a human, and explained what happened. He provided the receipt from the attendant, and after a little bit of insistance, they let it go. They must have eventually checked the Budget side of the lot and found it because we haven’t had any issues since then. We still use Avis.

If this was rented from LAX, I think this might be an LAX Hertz-specific issue, as I experienced a similar (though not quite as egregious) charge from them. I rented a Mustang GT-H about 8 years ago, filled the gas tank the brim at a gas station less than half a mile from Hertz LAX, verified that the gas gauge was beyond the 'F' mark, and promptly returned it and hopped on the airport shuttle. A few days later, I got an additional fuel charge (80-some dollars IIRC) and when I called them, they confirmed that I had been charged to refuel the completely full tank of the Stang I rented. The only way to reverse the charge was to provide a fuel receipt from that morning - which, of course, I had not saved. I no longer rent from Hertz LAX, and I save that last gas receipt when I rent elsewhere, just in case...

An additional tidbit on the reporting of the stolen car issue. Another scenario that wasn’t covered and probably still occurs frequently it’s when the RENTER of the car has it stolen and reports it to the police. Then, later, the RENTER recovers the car and returns it to the rental car company without telling them it had been stolen and w/o reporting to the police they recovered it. I wouldn’t take reports from the renter for this very reason, but I’m sure many jurisdictions do. In the “hood” a rental car is sometimes referred to as a “rock rental” because it cost a crack rock to rent… shockingly drug users don’t always return cars after renting them from other drug users… I’ve conducted felony car stops on rental cars and have learned to modify them quickly when the driver and occupants are 60+ years old…. You can still be safe without proning grandma and grandpa face down on the street…

That company once sent me a bill for damages to get the $2,000 of "self pay". What I did is to photograph the whole car from all sides the moment the employee sat in to note the mileage counter/odometer etc. I took a picture from all sides. Then three weeks later that bill came. I sent them the pictures with timestamp on them and with the employee on the picture taking the car - and then I never heard anything back anymore. BUT: Every car rental is a franchise. So every franchisee can be bad, worse, or somewhat ok. I made the experience that at airports there are worse (ah yes that tourist that will not return here to complain), and city outlets where many businesses rent are normally good.

Steve, the Hertz highway is seemingly steering and using full throttle back to Bankruptcy Court... The 9:00 to 9:40 mark is not completely accurate. Many big cities have electronic toll ways that renters travel through without a transponder, as an example, the northeastern portion of the U.S. uses EZ Pass, Florida uses SunPass, etc. Tolls are not immediatly billed as they are in many cases billed at the end of the month by the tolling company using toll by plate, another example are parking tickets that customers receive then do not pay and the fines increase. That too gets billed to the rental car company, which in turn is billed to the renter using the payment method provided at the time of rental processing. The rental transaction is never really done when a reciept is initially printed.

I rented three times from Hertz in Zurich, Switzerland and they found "damage" twice after I had returned home. Got the first "damage" false claim CXD but at the third rental they managed to bill me well after the car was returned for a "soiled baby seat". I travelled alone, no baby seat and no baby with me. When I asked them to produce a car baby seat rental agrement they backtracked and "only" billed me for alleged expensive cleaning agents to clean "baby poo-poo" in the car.. And, Yes, the car had been inspected on return by a Hertz employee the three times. Mind you, I was mad and wanted to sue them in Zurich but having to return to Zurich plus lawyer's fee just to start a procedure was more than what they stole from me so I let it go but I never rented from Hertz Switzerland/Europe afterward.

This one should be quick to settle in small claims court. I'd love to see a judge's reaction to a company rep trying to defend this.

Tesla charges the car owner for the fuel costs. Hertz customers knew this from the start. The problem is not that hertz is charging for fueling up tesla. The problem is how much it costs to fuel them.

Back in 2019, my now employer rented me a car with Hertz for my job interview. Before returning it, I topped it off. I'd only burned a gallon. They claimed that I had driven it 62 miles and left it on empty. If I'd truly burned a full 13.2 gallon tank for that car, it would have been 4.7 MPG. With the 1 gallon I did burn, that would mean it got 62MPG. (It wasn't a hybrid) I had to explain to them that their numbers were physically impossible so that they wouldn't charge my now employer a bullshit fee. Which they did acknowledge. But god damn, Hertz, what are you doing? EDIT: Also I tried renting a car with them later when I had my car on the lift for major work. They refused to rent to me insisting that my license was fake. So that's another fun story. I also once had Avis refuse to rent to me years before either of these due to lack of credit history, despite having paid in full several months in advance, and then try and charge me a no-show fee for it.

WHATS CRAZY is these companies REQUIRE A BACHELORS DEGREE! You have to be Edumacated! I had over a dozen years IN SALES ! was told we only interview applicants that have a collage degree, I asked what level! Associates? “NO YOU NEED A BACHELORS DEGREE” Kinda crazy to sign contracts for cars ( extensive sales experience doing so) and if you rent it out, you have to wash and vacuum it for the next customer, didn’t know a course in cleaning was available in collage. 🤷♂️

The biggest problem with Hertz, is that every location is privately owned, and they can basically do whatever they want. Corporate Hertz has very little control over what a location does. Which is why i don't like renting from them, but i am required to do so by my employer. We used to use National, and if i had an issue National corporate would step in and almost always make it right. Because National knew that a major company (like the one i work for) rents a LOT of cars, and it's in their best interest to stay on the bigger customers best side. Meanwhile, Hertz, the individual locations are run by crooks a lot of the time. I can't tell you how many times shady crap has happened at a Hertz rental location.

I get a discount to Hertz through AAA. One year, I reserved a rental car from Hertz for a vacation that we flew into a small regional airport. However, our initial flight was delayed. And it was delayed so much, we missed our connector and had to be booked on a flight that was 3 hours later, meaning we would get to our destination after 9:00. I thought to look at the hours for the Hertz counter at this airport and sure enough, they closed at 9. So I tried to call. No answer, guess they were busy. So I called the national number to ask for advice. I explained the situation and they took my new flight number and said someone would be at the counter when I landed. I confirmed with them someone would be there despite being after closing hours. They said, "yes". Well, many hours later, we landed at our destination. We walked over to the rental car area, and the Hertz counter was dark. So, I looked around for a note or something to see if maybe I had to call someone. Nothing. They just added salt to the wound of our flight being delayed. I will never rent from Hertz again, discount or not.

Hertz is the worst. I rented a Tesla Model 3 in Tuscon for 1 day! I got a bill for over $900 bucks! It was quoted at $103. They said the mobility pack was missing. I was never told about a mobility pack or used the mobility pack! I have been trying to get it fixed for 5 months! After 24 years, I will never rent from them again. Beware, they are the worst!

Hertz tried to bill me for a collision that happened 2 weeks after I returned the car. I had the counter person do a complete walk around looking for damage when I turned the car in, and they found NOTHING. The car had been rented 3 times between the time I turned it in and the time I found the $1000.00 charge on my credit card.

Sounds like these "mistakes" are a "cash-cow" for these companies like their hidden fees. So ... As the car might be driven across state/international lines, it might be time for the ICC and/or the FTC to "suggest" to rental car companies that the companies have a written procedure that will address these problems in an open and speedy manner.
