My 1st year with gouldians. 4 pairs breeding. 2 pairs successfully hatch babies. The other 2 were a bust. Felt like accomplish one a tough job. Crossing fingers for a successful weaning. Best of luck to your finches and upcoming breeding!!!

What do you feed them for the austerity diet before breeding diet and how long for ?

Hi Chris, I appreciate your videos on Gouldians. I have 2 pairs of Gouldians. My 1st pair have had many eggs. They had success and had 5 babies, but I disturbed them and they tossed the babies much to my dismay! She is still laying eggs but with no luck. My male is/was a stunning purple breast, blue back, however he started molting about 6 months ago, and he hasn’t got his full plumage back yet. The pair in my other cage both molted within a few weeks and are in great shape but they haven’t mated yet. My red head male dances and sings to her all the time! Anyway, back to the other pair, should I remove the nest from the cage for a month to give them a rest? Then put the nest back in early September ? Maybe he’s having a “stress molt”? I was thinking to put all the birds together so I can give the cage a thorough clean. What is your advice? Btw, I live in Hong Kong.

If your blue male is molting then splitting him from the hen to give him time to rest and molt will certainly help as he will concentrate on that, especially if the hen is still in breeding mode, it will help her to recover calcium levels etc too. I keep sexes separated out of season and have fantastic results when they do come back into season and are then paired up.

@@gouldianuk9875 Thank you so much. Why I didn't I think of that. I guess I need to put him on his own. If I put him with the other pair, that could also be stressful for him.

@@rosaliecarpio7768 yes I wouldn't disturb your other pair with a new male as he will probably be viewed as an intruder by both male and female. Lower stress levels or going into "Rest" mode will help him, small things such as no competition for food, roosting places at night etc will all help him get through the molt 👍
