I would not cut the desoldering braid into pieces or use it untinned. I always let it run full of tin from the end and then cut off the soaked piece, leaving 2-3 mm of tinned wire at the end. This allows the soldering iron to heat the stranded wire better the next time than a completely untinned copper stranded wire and you have made the best possible use of the suction effect of the stranded wire. Of course, you need sufficient flux, but you don't have to flood the board. I also use the lowest possible temperature and short exposure time so as not to loosen the bonding of the pads.

I always just did those by QFP solders by hand. I was never a fan of using hot air and all the prep, and potential accidents; so I’d use a fresh razor any time I’d have to replace one, and cut the legs off. Use a small knife style iron to practically just wipe the legs off a row at a time, the Hakko T15-KU specifically on an FX-951 station. Proper? Not at all. Cleaner? Also probably not. But from my experience over the last 3-4 years doing it as a profession, I found it personally more reliable. Emphasis on personally; because I’ve attempted to teach a colleague and he’d overheat and rip traces more often than not. All techniques depend on the person; but I just am amazed at how someone can blow that much hot air around and have it work out okay.
