The flashbacks about the main characters lives' were definitely the best parts of this anime, and provided loads of character development. However, there were waaaay too many characters that had zero backstory, and were completely uninteresting. Seriously, that chick who always says "how foolish". What was the point of having her in this anime? Not including her, there are at least 2-3 other characters that you forget even exist until they randomly show up in the background of a scene.

I personally loved this anime, and after watching this review i figured out why you didnt. You had way too high hopes for it. I watched it, not sure what to think, and was pleasantly surprised, and its one of my favorites. After watching this review, i realized: The reason you dont like it, is you thought it would be better than clannad. All you did was say it wasn't as good as clannad. Animation wasn't as good, characters wernt as good, ending wasn't as good. You cant compare this to something you prefer, thats why you didnt like it. It was too unfair of a comparison. If you look at it on its own, its fantastic. And i personally didnt have a problem with the pacing, it was its own thing. It was quick paced, but that doesnt make it bad, it makes it different.

Angel Beats! is simply the best series that ever got fucked over by executive meddling. And it still pisses me off so many years after it aired. The show was originally meant to be 26 episodes. The story was writen and a large cast included with this in mind. Suddenly getting the show cut to 13 episodes by the executives casued the vast majority of the problems listed in this review. Code Geass R2's pace was messed up by having to waste 4 episodes to explain the the events of season 1... Imagine what it's like to re-write a series after losing 13 episodes... The fact that Angel Beats! is still very good after getting so royally butchered is a testiment to how good this series really is, and a tragic reminder of how utterly awesome it should have been.

A recently developed theory: (Let's see if someone can disprove this one) One of the plot holes in Angel Beats! is how Angel (Kanade) was in "purgetory" before otonashi, fighting Yuri and the other members of SSS for some time before otonashi "appeared" in the purgatory. He clearly has been dead before Angel in the real world. Some people justify this fact by saying that the time pacing may be different in the "purgatory". But there were some other things that didn't make sense in the first place. For example Otonashi's Amnesia. He didn't die because of a Head injury or something. There was no evidence of a Head injury like dizziness or blood coming out of his head etc. after the train crash. He died because of internal bleeding and lack of food and water. At the end Yuri met the "shadow programmer" who claimed he was there from the beginning to prevent the purgatory from crashing. He also tells her this about the original programmer: "During his time in the Afterlife School, he fell in love with an unnamed girl who disappeared when her regret was fulfilled. Unwilling or unable to accept this, he decided to wait for her to return, however, many years passed and he grewmad with waiting, eventually programming himself to become an NPC" The current programmer also tells Yuri that the original programmer of the angel player is "still there to this day". We also know that the current programmer isn't the original because when Yuri asked the programmer about the original one he said "Beats me, it's not like I invented it" If you now take a close look at the scene when Otonashi wakes up in the purgatory he has the same clothing as other people that woke up as NPC's. Also remember what the programmer said:" he grew mad with waiting, eventually programming himself to become an NPC" and that "he is still there to this day". Furthermore when Takamatsu turned into an NPC he lost his memories as Otonashi did and also wears these "NPC clothing". As previously stated Otonashi didn't die because of a head injury. So the only explanation is that he was an NPC. You might have already noticed where this is heading to. Yes, this theorie suggests that Otonashi was the original programmer. This would also mean that angel wasn't in purgatory before Otonashi which is why the end would make sense again. However this doesn't explain why he reverted from beeing an NPC during the battle between Yuri and Angel (Kanade) at the very beginning. So here is what this theory proposes: The current programmer ( or shadow programmer) told Yuri that he activated after Yuri began to display her powerful feeling of love to her comrades in the battlefront. The shadow programmer refers to love as a "bug in the system". This could explain why Otonashi, the original programmer, awaked from his NPC state as a way to fix the system. The fact that he was an NPC meant that he had amnesia. Therefore he wasn't able to remember his past life or the fact that he was the original programmer. The only reason he remembered his past life was due to the combination of hypnosis and listening to his own heart beat. My personal adding to this theorie: The quote I mentioned before which includes what the shadow programmer told Yuri about the original programmer also fits very well to the the situation of Otonashi which is shown in the OVA called "Another epilogue". "he is waiting for someone". Connecting this OVA with the rest of this theorie brings me to the conclusion that the OVA could be an epiolouge but also a prequel. Think about that. Have a nice day (^-^)/
@KilikSilvaSon
9 жыл бұрын
Fannix - Loopstation Pianist If that was the case, and Otonashi had been an NPC that regained its memories, then that means that Yuri and all the other members of the battlefront would have known he was previously an NPC, and somebody would have confronted him at some point. Also, Otonoshi regained all of his memories, so if he had in fact been the original programer, he would have remembered it. That being said, something that supports your theory is when Yuri tells Hinada in the final episode that she was not surprised that Takamatsu became normal again because "It [the NPC program] was designed that we could return to normal if our feelings are strong enough." Your theory is interesting, but I personally don't think that Otonashi was an NPC or the original programmer. I think you are looking too deeply into the ending, While I see where you're coming from, I don't think there is any deeper meaning to the ending, I think it was just poorly written (albeit enjoyable).
@Yomuju
9 жыл бұрын
Fannix - Loopstation Pianist 1.) All of the members of the Battlefront would recognize him. 2.) The programmer must have been there for some time before the events that take place, and must have also been in the world for a long time. But, because of the events that take place in real world, that can't be true. Otonashi could have only been dead for a couple of months, at most a year or two, before Kanade came back, not really enough time for him to go insane, crack the world system, and then develop a program to control it. 3.) He had no prior knowledge to computer programming, as shown during his flashbacks, he was medically oriented. 4.) The OVA can't be a prequel. He specifically alludes to Yuri, Kanade, and Iwasawa. Plus many other problems with that conjecture. My personal favorite (albeit, it does have one problem that I am aware of, but one that could be explained) is that Otonashi, having no regrets when he died, passed on peacefully and his soul was floating around in some heaven or otherwise stagnant. But, after Kanade died and went to the purgatory world, it became apparent that she would never be able to leave, as she couldn't fulfill her wish to thank the person who have her her heart. Otonashi's soul was put into the world by some force so that Kanade could "graduate" from the purgatory world. His memories were erased or otherwise limited because if he remembered his entire past, he would also remember that he had no regrets and would graduate nearly immediately. To counteract that, his memories were erased so that it would give time for Kanade to fulfil her wish. I still think that the old man that Yuri ran into in the computer lab was the original programmer. He didn't seem like a teenager, but considering he cracked the world and was able to program things in it for himself, he could have changed his appearance. He seemed eerily familiar with the world and what was going on in it. The biggest quote that got me was when he stated "Everything in this world runs on computers". It really sounds like he knows what he's talking about.
@Anzerke
9 жыл бұрын
Fannix - Loopstation Pianist You're overthinking the memory thing. He had amnesia because his heart was transplanted into Kanade after his death. Japanese folklore holds that the heart is where memories are kept. Thus lacking a heart meant that he lost his memories, by the same token when he got close to Kanade and heard his own heart beating in her chest, his memories returned.

I think this would have been considered an epic anime if it was 24 episodes so that their could be character development for the whole battlefront, so that when they did disappear it would mean something more.. i was close to tears when graduation happened but still didn't cry. Romance did feel random like otonashi barely hanged out or interacted with angel until towards the end of the series. I thought he was feeling the president. Then out of the blue he says that he wants to be with angel forever i was like.... since when? And Nado's love for yurippe was never realized i felt like that had more development than otonashi's pairing the only one that kind of made since was hinata x yui. Overall, the show was tied together a bit at the end it's a good anime not the best but good.

I never had the feeling that there was a love triangle. Not once throughout the whole show are we given a clue that there's more between Otonashi and Yuri than friendship and the occasional teenage-related sexual tension. Nor do we ever get the feeling Yuri is jealous of Kanade. Also comparing Otonashi and Shirou Emiya to the bland guy from Another is a bit harsh. I agree that Otonashi isn't developed much until his backstory, and the main thing he has going for him is the amazing voice acting of Hiroshi Kamiya (known for Levi from Attack on Titan, Law from One Piece, Araragi from Bakemonogatari and funny enough: Shinji from Fate/Stay Night) but he's still much more entertaining and charismatic than that guy. And Shirou is as non-bland and well developed as a main protagonist can get (even if he is so in a lot of negative ways). As for the "plot-hole" from the ending: I understand what people don't like about it, but concerning that the setting is a kind of purgatory, I have the same opinion like I had about the controverse ending of Lost: Time can't be expected to work in the afterlife like it does in reality. And since nobody can prove the opposite (the same as with time travel stories), I simply choose to accept how it works in the specific story it happens in. I agree that the show could've used more episodes to flesh out some of the other, more interesting looking characters, but overall this show and especially its ending and Otonashi's backstory (which was by far the best episode) worked well for me on an emotional level.

Angel Beats was short, yeah that's true. But still, considering that it has only 13 episodes it's quite good. If we talk about music, Angel Beats is way superior to other Key Anime. Not just the opening, "Ichiban no Takaramono" is another great song. Jun Maeda's ability as a composer shines on this anime. I don' think that you get what makes Angel Beats great. It's the idea. The story is about boys & girls who are at a limbo. Most of them have a tragic past. And they need to overcome that, in order to continue with the circle of life. In the universe of Angel Beats, when you die you re-born as another person. 1 - Angel Beats reminds us that we're going to die eventually. And that's why we must follow our dreams. 2 - We're humans and we can't go against the circle of life. Things can go wrong if we try to go against it. And many other reasons makes this show great.

Isaac McDaniel it didn't felt like a 10/10. the character story was not very good in some characters ( -i'm talking to u TK. it would be an awesome character but guess what? they completly ignored him- ) they did like only 6 backstorys out of 18+ SSS characters. they could had done more backstories instead of some comedy scenes ( wich most of all were meh. ) . and i didn't fell those fells everybody had. just sobbed sometimes. but can't deny it has one of the best first episodes i've seen in anime. ik it's your opinion and i respect that since most people don't agree with me either when i say that mirai nikki and elfen lied are my fav animes

I mostly agree with this review. By far the biggest issue is how obviously rushed it was. I'm pretty sure that at some point it was said that the show was intended to be twice the length and then during production it got changed. If this is true, it would explain a lot. I would heavily disagree with the soundtrack, I thought the music was brilliant, but music is a pretty subjective thing. Plus I'd say the equipment people use will affect their opinion on sound as a whole. The VN's 1st part comes out in Spring 2014, so I'm very excited to play it. This should hopefully address the major problems the anime had. I'd say in spite of that, I enjoy this anime a lot, even though it has some heavy flaws. They didn't have enough time to dive into the characters like they need to, and in the world itself. I'll be very disappointed if the VN doesn't deliver.

I feel kind of the same, except I found Angel Beats to be much more enjoyable than both Clannad and Kanon. I grew more attached to Angel Beats' characters than any of the saccharine moe blobs in Clannad and Kanon. I agree completely with what you said about tragedy and emotion without any purpose, but that's why I dislike Clannad and Kanon, not Angel Beats. The tragedy in those shows is so overblown, ridiculous, and gratuitous that it just fails, in my opinion. Why should I care that Fuko's actually a ghost? Because she's cute? She's also too stupid to live, but so what? Why should I feel anything for a fictional character who's done nothing but drool and make wooden starfish? I guess my point is that the characters in Angel Beats feel more like real people who I can relate to and sympathize with. I know what it feels like to be alone in the world and to believe that life is too unfair for a kind God to exist, so what the characters in Angel Beats go through really hits home with me. The characters in Clannad are just randomly sick, and it's supposed to be sad because they're cute and silly. It's ridiculous and it's kind of insulting, in my opinion.
@Aazdremzul

I agree, most characters in Angel Beats do seem more "real" than most animes. Maybe that is why when they get "obliterated" I actually feel something. Animes seem to blow things into amazing proportions that don't even appear real anymore, but Angel Beats keeps a sort of realism that isn't easily found in anime. So when they have a moment of emotion it makes a bit of a profound feel.

One thing I hated about Angel Beats was that I wanted to see more of the characters back stories of how they died. I feel like if they had more episodes they could have answered more questions about the characters, and fleshed out the show better. Still a great show, but I really wish there was more. I felt that void you were speaking of after watching many shows most recently Sword Art Online. I wanted another show with a deeper fantasy like atmosphere, because I felt there was so much just not shown. "Look at the pretty world, now only look at the world we want you to see."

I don't get people complaining over the plot hole of the *SPOILERS* heart transplant even though Otonashi died much earlier. After he died and kanade gets the donated heart he could've been in the space between living and his awakening in episode 1. Its like sleeping you only know when you wake up the period of time in between is forgotten. So after Kanade's whole life she came to the campus and Otonashi just happened to wake up then. Its not like someone decides immediately after death you go to the campus you don't know the time spent between their death and them arriving to the school.

Well this heart donor thing is totally messed up. This guy died from inner bleeding rendering his organs totally useless as a transplant. So if you think about it the problem really isn´t that she had to die before him... Especially what do we know about time in the afterlife... The point is why even bothering? I dont get the people who complain about logic or (physical) accuracy. It is an anime not reality so just enjoy the show and don´t think to much into real-life patterns which obviously aren´t supposed to work....

Kanus Cochranus Well if he died from starvation his organs would be in a much more messed up way (well they are partially self-digested), but since it only was a few days he might got dehydrated which isnt a much better scenario either because his body most likely poisoned it self a lot... His kidneys wouldn´t be able to work properly due the lack of water as a medium to solve the poisons. Also he held his side a lot so I thought it could have been an inner bleeding but I could also be his hurting kidney. But after all organs for donations require (as cruel as it might sound) a swift brain death of an overall mostly healthy body. So a nearly starving person with some injury really isn´t a good donor in any case...

At first I thought this anime was sad(but not good enough to make me cry), but I started to like it less or think it's not that sad. This anime is so fast pace and need more screen time for some characters. Now for the sad part, after I start watching more anime, I think this anime isn't that sad as I used to think it is. One piece give off more sadder moments than angel beat.

***** Yeah its the problem with anything under 20 episodes you dont have that time you develop the characters to get the views as invested but it some what made good use of its time(Ive seen longer series waste there time and dont make me as a viewer care at all about the characters or story). Also I dont think its fair to compare to one piece or anything with such a long run (Im not a fan of the big 3 myself) because it has more time for the viewer to invest in the characters or story so even smaller things that arent really as sad/tragic will feel more because youve grown more attached.

The explanation for that final plot twist/hole, is something that unfortunately was not explained well, and by that I mean almost at all. The mention that the creator of the Angel Player system turned himself into an NPC to escape the endless years of waiting that he would have to suffer through. Now the plot hole was the fact that Yuzuru died before Kanade, as referenced by the fact that she got his heart in an organ transplant, and yet she had already been in the Purgatory world long before he woke up at the start of the series. Now what we were supposed to figure out from that vague reference to the creator of the Angel Player was that the creator was Yuzuru himself. He used Angel Player to turn himself into an NPC and set it so that he would "Awaken" again when a certain condition was met, we don't know what that condition was, but it explains why Yuzuru awakened when Kanade had been in the world for some time already, despite the fact that he died before her. The explanation is that Yuzuru had actually been in the world even longer than Kanade, but had been a simple NPC, existing beneath anyone's notice.

I actually like Angel Beats quite a lot. The Characters weren't all that bad really... Sure they all should have had more screen time - thus more episodes - but Otanashi (although a simple character) was a good protagonist, Yuri, despite being similar to Haruhi in personality and looks - somewhat, had all of her good personality traits minus the over-the-top eccentricity which kept me from really liking Haruhi as a great character, and Angel was a cuter version of Yui Nagato with slightly more emotion. Sure this may make them rip-off characters, but who really cares that much? It's a different anime from TMoHS. I just wished the story was fleshed out longer like it is suggested in this review; also I wished they expanded the fighting of the SSS to achieve it's goal of rebelling against God more, there was the fight scene in Ep 1 and the Guild Parachute thing in Ep 2 and the crisis with Angel later (but that doesn't really count as rebelling against God), but aside from those memorable moments and a few side operations collecting lunch tickets (Those Scabs) there wasn't much more rebelling. The shadows at the end where a good way to get the SSS to fight but it ultimately brought the SSS's end [Sorry very minor spoiler there]. I'll end just saying that in my humble, honest opinion (which you can ignore) Angel Beats was enjoyable for me, but it could be improved to be even better. It also bugged me that there was a potential love triangle between Yuri, Angel and Otanashi which was missed by the animators, but that was only in my opinion, most on the internet focus more on the barely present love between Yuri and Noda - who was the character I hated the most in this anime. Also, I may be really dense for not noticing, but what plot-hole was there at the end? I haven't noticed anything really confusing or something that didn't make sense during the ending.
@BortaMaga
10 жыл бұрын
What love triangle? I didn't see any love triangle in that anime
@Shft-T4b
10 жыл бұрын
There isn't one in the anime, but i meant that there was a potential for one between Yuri, Otonashi and Kanade, in my opinion the anime just didn't make use of it. It seems reasonable because Yuri looks out for him from the moment he arrives, she reveals her past first to him before the other characters, Yuri selects him for operations a lot, those 2 are the last ones standing a lot of the time, and there were a few tiny bits here and there suggesting something like when she blushed in ep 2 as Otonashi was climbing the chain and he also sniffed her chest (lol :D) Then there is Kanade who was the actual love interest so the anime already shows what Otonashi and Kanade could do with each other. Basically I am saying that there was potential that was dropped or never realised by the creators of Angel Beats.

Yes i agree, there were some plot holes. But that's about it.... I cried my eyes out during this anime. Clannad didn't make me do that. Also, i have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA how you don't like the music, I even bought the album and listen to it at least every day. And Clannad better than this, come on. Clannad and afterstory are good anime but in my eyes overrated (let the haters come). It was to long, there was little to no character development aside from Tomoya, because of the many episodes they became forgetful and personally I hoped for Tomoyo to end up with Tomoya, instead of Nagisa.

I find the comment about Clannad having no character development apart from Tomoya extremely ironic The main flaw of Angel Beats in my eyes was the characters. Since they had such a large cast, all with backgrounds which needed explaining, yet with such little airing time, we never really got to get any character development for the majority of the characters. The characters in Clannad, however never were 'forgetful' as you say they are. We got to see the background of most of them individually, and a lot of them had very interesting stories. And if you really wanted Tomoyo to end up with Tomoya instead of Nagisa, you could always play the game and go on the Tomoyo route, or just watch the OVA. Also don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Angel Beats is bad. In fact, I quite enjoyed it. I just dont think your point about Angel Beats being better Clannad is true (in my opinion) and I felt the need to state that But in the end, it all boils down to your opinions and personal preference so I guess what I said doesn't really matter
@twot2224

***** Actually I agree. Clannad is by far a superior anime to Angel Beats and had much more character development. But what it lacked in development it made up for in comedy. I came to remember and love the side characters because they all had their hilarious moments while with Clannad because the show made it obvious that Tomoya (or tomoyo I've forgotten) was going to end up with Nagisa, through episodes that were devoted to other people it just felt like filler. But I didn't have this problem in other anime like Toradora that did the same thing. Making it obvious that the two main characters were always going to get together but having love interests anyway. I loved the all the characters even if their parents hadn't died in a massive plane crash. Also I watched the OVA and honestly it just felt weird and out of place.

When a anime makes me cry that is something. Angel Beats did that. Clannad did the opposite of that. I didn't get emotional at it unlike Angel Beats did. I felt for the characters. I liked the whole idea of the plot. I would rate it 9/10. Clannad 5/10.

Are you trolling? I felt nothing sadness wise in Angel Beats and is severely overrated with a plothole as Arkada said, as big as the moon as the 'reveal' seemed to a be a petty effect to make you feel for the characters disregarding the fact it would actually make no sense whatsoever . It also felt rushed to me so I felt no development with the characters so I would give it a solid 6/10, average tbh. I watched Clannad and was hooked straight away and I loved the character development, Afterstory made me cry for a long long time and a story that made a lot more sense overall. I feel like you may not of watched the second season of Clannad or you are just trolling. I would give Clannad as a whole a solid 9.44 just like Arkada :)

No I'm not trolling. I actually think my opinion is true. I actually loved it so much that I'm learning how to play the opening song on the piano. One of the things I hate about Clannad is the art. I absolutely despise it. That's one of the things I docked points off. The other thing is, when there were sad parts, it's nothing compared to how each character in Angel Beats. How each of them died was so depressing.
@PrismaticFitness

Your opinion is not a fact at all nor will I say mine is. I literally found nothing in Angel Beats sad and even laughed at the stupidity of the ending. It was only after I finished the anime that I found out it was supposed to be sad. Clannad had me in tears throughout and it is actually very very sad and my favourite anime of all time. I also love the art style of Clannad personally, it reflects the type of story presented very well. Taking points off just for that is just silly.
@thesharinganbeast6478

I just think how everyone died in the story was really sad and when they find true happiness they come back to the world. I found the ending sad but happy at the same time. Also the opening is one of my favorite openings of an anime of all time. Yeah, overall I think it's just a sadder story. It's probably a tie between Angel Beats and Sakurasou No Pet Na Kanojo in the sad category. I don't get how you like the art style and character designs of clannad because it's just plain shit.

***** I don't get what your saying but if I would guess your wondering how I feel depressed if you already know what it's about before? Well they might be dead but you don't know how they died. I mean you don't know how Otonashi died until like episode 8. Did you watch WatchMojo.com and the top 10 saddest anime deaths? Well that one was on the list.

SPOILERS BELOW ,POSSIBLE EXPLANATION FOR THE PLOT HOLE I assume that the plot hole you're talking about is the fact that Otanashi came after Kanade to purgatory. There is one really interesting explanation to this,and it's not the usual ,that Otanashi was in heaven,and then came back to purgatory to free Kanade from suffering in purgatory forever. Do you guys remember when Yuri went to the guild last time to check out the reason behind shadows spawning? There was a programmed "NPC" who has told her everything about a certain someone ,who was waiting for a girl to come ,even though he knew that chances are almost 0% that she actually will? Then that person proceeded to make himself and NPC ,so he could reset his memory and stop suffering forever,and also made the program to do the same thing to everyone who's the same as him in the future? Now ,since Angel Beats is really short,there is no reason that they would take a half of the episode just for this encounter ,if it wasn't of significant ...significance? Basically what could've happened is that Otanashi actually came before everyone,made himself into an NPC cause of the reasons stated above.The person said there is only 1 NPC like that ,so since it is not ever revealed who he is ,it is entirely possible that he's actually Otanashi. Now ,the only unanswered part would be how the hell he woke up at such a time (ep 1),and why was he in the purgatory if he had a "fulfilling death"? For the second question,he says once in the show that he would really love knowing that his organs actually saved someone's life. The reason he was put there is to overcome that,but he didn't. He wited for the girl and knew that there is almost no chance that she will come and what happened after that is explained above. And for the first question,It was because of Yuri, as the Program also stated in their confrontation in the solo mission. The Program had activated and begun the shadow purge after Yuri began displaying her powerful feelings of love for her comrades in Battlefront. So it's only natural that the creator of such a program, Otonashi, in his NPC state, would wake up around the early stages of Yuri's activities. This theory is also supported by the fact that the amnesia is also explained that way.Since Otanashi did not die by a blow to the head,or something similar,so he has no reason to have it,since he died of a combination of dehydration,starvation and severe panic,therefore ,no reason for amnesia.But if the case is,as in this theory,Otanashi lost his memories due to his memory reset as an NPC (the same thing happened to the nudist guy). This theory was made by /u/Kibonnu on reddit,so if you are a reddit user ,go give him a big ass pat on the back.
@CobaltLancer

@Acencial AMV Well, no. Otonashi is not the programmer and there are several points to prove it. - If him waking up in the NPC uniform was a point, it’s not. The manga revealed that everyone who enters the place wears the NPC uniform. The manga also opened up the same way as the anime except it’s Hinata entering. - The AI also told Yuri that the programmer is just like the Afterlife Battlefront, hiding amongst the NPCs and that she wouldn’t know who he is, even if he told her. Yuri knows who Otonashi is so that also proves it’s not him. Well, these are the important ones for now

Rushed as hell pacing and backstories, hardly focused on the afterlife, pointless action when you can't die, and tried too hard to make me sad at times (Sad Machine anyone?). Also, can fans explain how Otonashi can even see Kanade at the end when he donated his heart to her? You can't live without one! Or how the very last scene happened in general ? I'm sorry, but this show had a lot of potential, but was very disappointing in the end

Spoilers!!!! Often times anime are sad because of the hardships that the characters that you have come to enjoy go through rough patches but angelbeats was sad for a different reason. I found angelbeats sad because it shed light on the fact that many die without having a youth. The concept of allowing these people to have the experiences of a life that they could not truly enjoy was beautiful to me. Although this anime did not have a truly complete story it is still one of my favorites for the message it sends.

Electric Zone 1 I hang out around the Angel Beats! wiki and I'll give you in answer in my own eyes. Time may not exist in the Afterlife and anyone who dies, regardless of what time of death or period, would end up there. For example, Otonashi died way before Kanade and when he got there, the latter had been there for a long time before the former showed up. I hope the Visual Novel would help us understand the world of the Afterlife.

I haven't watched any of the similar shows yet, because I'm actually scared that they would make me cry even harder than AngelBeats did. I mean, I fucking love this anime. Personally I have to agree with basically all your points - I'd been recommended this show so many times by so many people, and basically all of them had said it made them cry with emotion. And then I got to watching it... and I can't honestly say that there was a moment in which I even came close to tears - maybe it's because I watched it just after Steins;gate (which I can't recommend enough), but the plot and (main) characters just felt boring (although as you said the moments/episodes that actually went into supporting characters stories were pleasantly entertaining), and honestly I feel my favourite parts were when the crew was goofing around, or when we actually got a chance to look into specific characters, I'd have loved to learn more about TK or Hinata, but we just didn't :/ Also SPOILERS: One thing that really really bugged me was how when the time came, all the supporting cast were able to simply "fulfill" themselves and disappear? I've heard that it was supposed to have more episodes, and it was at this point that I really felt like there should have been more. Aside from all that, I did enjoy it overall, just felt like it could have been much, much better. But anyway, great review - there's mine above - overall I give it a 7/10 - much like yours ;D Have a good day people!

This is the very first video I've watched on this channel, and I must say, I have been turned off of watching anything else. Unfair, yes, but this absolutely horrid review was too much for me to attempt to continue. You attack Angel Beats for the very reason that the show is great. An example being that you said that the main characters lack... character. I can't see how anyone who actually watched this could think that. Okay, so maybe Angel herself is bland, but Otonashi and Yurippe were VERY fleshed out, with Yurippe being interesting from the get-go and her backstory explained as early as episode 2, and Otonashi being slowly developed over time as he gets his memories back. You attack the ending saying that it is a massive plot hole. This may seem true on the surface, but apply some critical thinking. Is it possible that just maybe time is irrelevant once you are dead? The only reason you hate the ending is because you seem to be closed-minded about how life works in an anime that is about not life, but the afterlife. And there lies the real problem I can't continue to watch your channel. You are closed minded. A reviewer needs to be open minded and see things the way that the creators were intending them to be seen. Not everything makes sense from the same perspective. Therefore, your reviews are useless to anyone that does not see or think exactly like you. I hope you take my criticism as an opportunity to better yourself and your work. No matter what you do, good luck in your endeavors.

He said the ending failed to get to him, "even forgetting the massive plothole." I buy into the warped time thing, but it didn't get to me either. I didn't find Otonashi to be all that interesting, since he has the same "I'll help as many people as possible" mentality that so many protagonists do. (There were a few examples in this review.) Revealing his tragic past didn't have much impact on his personality going forward, as is the case for Yuri. And, personally, I found the backstories to be eye-rollingly over the top in how tragic they were. My problem with the ending is that I didn't even see the romantic relationship between Otonashi and Kanade until the last episode. It seemed so poorly developed, but maybe that's because she was so distant for most of the show. Even though I thought the twist was actually good, it was more of a moment of epiphany than one of sadness for me. The mystery was solved, but since I didn't care about that character relationship, it wasn't at all sad to me. But we all have opinions. I wouldn't suggest dropping Arkada's reviews, because, while I will admit that this is one of his poorer ones, his later stuff is very professionally done. And disagreeing with someone doesn't mean you should ignore their opinion. I don't like his Watamote review, but I still watch his stuff.

Originally written for 26 episodes, executives abruptly cut it down to thirteen, forcing several loose ends to be tied up hurriedly late into the series and some characters' backstories being unexplored and their issues left unresolved on-screen by the time it ended. The director was not happy about this at all, plus this decision has helped contribute to a lot of the flak this show has gotten.
@runningwild09

"Needs more episodes, not another season" yes, someone gets it. If they did atleast a 24 episode season, then I think they could have easily slowed the pacing much better and thus could easily spend enough time for each character. Whenever they did focus on one person for the whole episode and their story, I feel like they really did a good job at showing what they went through and how current events relate to things. Personally, I was emotional during MC's story with his little sister, and the ending too since it felt like he was alone, but never really was. Of course the reasoning between how MC and Angel were connected, is clever

I don't know if it was mentioned before (probably it was), but I don't consider this big plothole (how Kanade got there before Otonashi)as a plothole at all. Kanade's regret could only be lifted by Otonashi. So Otonashi's soul was put there in timeline later than his death, otherwise Kanade's regret couldnt be possible to resolve. Simple as that.

I suppose the one thing I like about this anime (besides the openning) was the atmosphere. The show felt "right." I guess this is why people blindly declare their loyalty to it without really thinking it through. Also, if you haven't seen Clannad and Clannad After Story (basically this, but improved in every way), this anime may seem like the saddest thing ever. Ford Hooper this anime IS fucking amazing. And when i watch an anime i dont analyze it to death i just enjoy the fucking thing and if its good its good, if its bad its bad, and i loved this one. Its stupid to say "Hey this show feels right and i like it BUT WAIT! LET ME OVER-ANALYZE IT UNTIL I DON`T LIKE IT ANYMORE" like really? Yeah and i think this is a bad review also lol

Kristina Drew Only morons believe something is good if they just simply like it. Likeing something and saying its good are two diffrent things. When a show has problems they should be addressed and looked over. That is the job of a critic, because they are people who don't accept every thing they are feed.

If i like it its good for me (or replace the word "like" with "love" cos yeah, you could like something but still be "meh"). End of story. Talking about this is pointless anyway :P

I have come to realize that Japan has a over saturation of high-school themed anime/mangas and instantly the conclusion drawn is that that's because the age of the major demographic is young. But that's not the case as 25 and older is the major demographic that views anime and reads mangas. Most animes when it does start with someone after high-school have their life either miserable or boring and they revert back to a younger age or back to high-school for some reason. Which causes me to believe that Japan views adulthood as miserable and that high-school or school life in general was the highlight of their life. I believe since the majority of readers have lived through it, miss it. They reminiscence with being with their friends, having more free time, and most of all having hope that their life will be something more. Japan as a culture believes in stoicism and working constantly. Almost like they have that hopeful part taken from them like a child losing their innocence too early and over compensate with child like things they didn't get to truly have.
