I fucking love paranoia agent. One of my top ten favorites easily! The overall message about lies spreading faster than the truth is so relevant to how information is spread today. Plus the ending was fantastic, I believe Maniwa finally discovered that no matter how hard he tried to be an agent of truth the cycle of lies is never ending. To hardcore fans of anime I highly recommend you view this masterpiece of a series.

One can view it as a commentary. How the younger generation has down-graded their influence in World War 2, represented by the denial and washing of guilt, and hinted at by the younger generation's lack of knowledge towards the atrocities done by their ancestors. And, just as the ending implied, the tragic results of this washing of guilt is bound to repeat itself as long as denial is still in effect. Satoshi, IMO, sees himself as that seemingly senile man, who saw and still sees that denial to this day.

I don't think you are supposed to understand Paranoia agent, i think you are supposed to feel it. It's Satoshi Kon and he isn't being pretentious like the creators of NGE and i think this succeeded where NGE failed. The visuals, the music, and the story all make you reflect upon your own life and it doesn't come off as preachy horseshit like NGE did but rather sincere. Kon was is the Stanley Kubrick of animation, while Miyozaki is the Hitchcock. So watch this show all of Kon's other works.

Nge doesn't have any flaws except the pacing shift in the show and there is nothing preachy about eva. Religion is barely touched on in the show, and the creators of the show aren't pretentious at all everything is spelled out for the viewer (especially by the end) and If you're still confussed the EoE movie basically shows you step by step what happened during the third impact. I'm assuming this guy didn't understand eva at all considering he thinks you're not supposed to understand paranoia agent when like eva everything is spelled out for the viewer.

I saw this when I was thirteen on Cartoon Networks Adult Swim block in 2005. I wasn't too into it, but I did watch it probably just because it was on and I liked other shows on the Saturday night lineup. Cause I wasn't into it I watched it without thinking about what was going on. It was pretty easy to deduce when it was a characters mad warped perspective and what not, and by the end it all made sense, looking back it's almost too easy to make sense of it all, The one detective who went crazy and the other detectives sick wife kind of explained it away pretty much. I'm the kind of person who likes it when the creators leave you wondering, especially with a show like Paranoia Agent.

The theme present regarding the media and the aspect of rumors taking on a life of their own, as well as the the characters having their own personal demons to deal with, is very similar to Persona 4. +Glass Reflection Why are the so called "fillers" like the one with the "suicide squad" "bad"? They also had their value, not directly to the plot, but ofc the message to critisise the social enviroment is obvious. Also creating a girl character, which maybe wasnt even a teen, to have a road movie with her 2 "fellowers" to commit suicide, puts you in a very uncomfortable position - in a good way if you consider the teaching value of this work. Her cheerful and charming character almost breaks your heart, when you start to wonder, why she wants to do this. For me this episode is one of the most memorable episodes ever produced.

Let me explain this to everyone. In the beginning credits, you see everyone laughing, you will notice that everyone in the series has their own stress, faults, mental disorders, etc. Each running into the opportunity to meet little slugger when the moment finally arrives. Little Slugger isn't real. Its their scapegoat and it all started with ONE person that needed that scapegoat. A lie that made everyone use to relieve themselves with, fooling themselves and others into believing that they are now free from whatever they were running from. Each of these people are at times horrible human beings that want a second chance and ones that want to make Little Slugger more real than they want him to be. In one episode a wife finds out that her husband was attacked by an assailant but in actuality, she probably did it herself, and blamed a phenom to prove to others that he is real and she has experienced it. Another episode shows that there are many ways to relieve yourself from your paranoia, Suicide. Proving that not all problems can be solved by waiting for a imaginary kid with golden blades and a crooked bat to give them that sweet sweet release. Everyone in the series are liars, and their lies are catching up to them, they imagine Little Slugger appearing because that is what they want in their minds to believe. The explanation of which everyone is laughing in the beginning have encountered little slugger and got away with their immoralities. causing them to be at peace with this final lie. Promising themselves that they are now at peace because of an attack, none died from the attack which means that they have self mutilated themselves and made an excuse of which ONE person conjured up. Even when Little Slugger can't appear a man that was secretly recording his daughter changing clothes wished Little Slugger would do something but later found out she got complete amnesia giving him the LEGITIMATE second chance in a most disgusting way without admitting his wrong doings. So in short, everyone in the series are Liars. Little Slugger is a entity that never existed, and used this as their scapegoat from their own delusions of to a new start by lying their way out of it. And regardless of their nature, they will never admit to it. Thus, making this anime a great psychological thriller basing on people who are just horrible people trying to start a new without coming clean. And yet regardless of their final result, they are so delusional that they are sleeping in a meadow in the end, thinking they have fooled everybody, but in actuality, they are still the same person.

Good review :D But do people really think Paranoia Agent is confusing? It's not complicated at all, everything is actually spelled out by the end. Hell, Big O's second season was more mind fucky than this, really made me think about what I watched xD :D All in all, it's a good show, but probably the weakest thing Kon made. Not bad, actually almost excellent, but still the weakest. The filler episodes, except for family planning, should have been cut out, so they could have fleshed out the ending. It just needed some time to breathe and maybe show what happened to the younger cop. His change is too sudden and out of nowhere

Listen i figuerd out what paranoia agent is/was about shounen bat was the image of depression , and only a person who has been though it and helped other through it can understand , this man was a artist when it came to projecting a emotion to anime he is one of the top in any ones list. This wont be understood by the simple minded and the experienced but i know for a fact that this is what its its about. I watched this before satoshi passed away.

This was way easier for me to grasp then Lain or Paprika. I understood it fully within a day while with Lain I contemplated it for weeks.

Ghost in the shell 2 was pretty warped. Was the the one you meant when you recommended GitS?

I always hated the final scene of this anime with the big ass question mark that makes it seem like it won't be the end still one of my favs regards

What I meant was the show Paranoia Agent. Not this review of it. My bad. And I checked the original run of Paranoia Agent; it ran from February 2004 to May 2004 -- I was eleven-years old when it was on Adult Swim.

Tristen, i hate to be this person, but could you recommend something for me? :) I really like creepy or scary anime and all anybody recommends is either Hellsing or Another and I've seen both. I would love if you could recommend something for me. Thanks!

Agreed! When it aired i was watching any anime that was on American tv and although its certainly not one of my favorites I caught every episode until it was done. It was interesting to say the least.

why not just do a top 10 favourite. not a complete analysis, but just the top 10 things you've seen that you really like and go back to. doesn't need to be indepth and reviewerly, just an expression of your tastes as they currently stand
