Watched your 15000 mile review and you changed my mind about getting an Elantra N. This vid got me to subscribe and start looking at a core GR Corolla with the performance and tech packages. I'm a 72 year old guy who had one of those Evo 8's for five years and still wants the speed and performance and the Elantra's wheel hop and just the lack of rear drive just made me hesitate. Your vids have pushed me over the top and I landed on a Toyota. I'm now looking forward to the day after Thanksgiving. Thanx Dave

I love how thorough you were with this 'review' - As I am currently looking into ordering one, I am looking for 'reviews' that showcase the cars "flaws" or "cons" from a honest owners perspective. My '12 Audi A5 (b8.5 6spd three pedal manual) has seen better days, and I want another fun car. Euro is out of the picture after owning the maintenance fiasco nonsense. I am really interested in the Rola GR, I already passed on a '24 GR86 strictly because of the Boxer engine. Civic Type R is just too "hot boi racer", the Supra is too hard to find in Manual and hard to justify the price when I could just get a Z4. Rant over, this was a great upload!

Great Video! I totally understood how good this car was after 9k miles when you said it's like the day after Thanksgiving! That is one of, if not my best feasting day! Very good explanation of what the car is, and your reasoning for getting the Core. I'm on the fence right now between the Core and Circuit, I need to price the hood first to see the difference being the core can be built to the Circuit specs with the performance package and other options. I now daily drive a 911 CS 991, and love it, but I want something a little more compact and not as high of a maintenance...with Porsche you need a tool for everything! I use to work for Toyota, so I know the quality of the vehicle, they will last IF you take car of it, and it won't cost you much. I think it has enough performance for the average driver out there...9 out of 10 people cannot drive a performance car 9/10ths of it's limit, yet they want more power...modify the nut behind the wheel first! I like the mod you did with the arm rest, I will have to do that should I decide to get this GR Corolla, the rest I feel can be as it is. Good to know after 9k miles the car is still very tasty!

I’m a 6’4” guy with a wife and infant considering this car. Glad to hear that it’s worked well for you space-wise and that you’re really enjoying the experience overall. We got the wife a manual Elantra GT N-Line a few years ago, and I’ve fallen in love with the idea of having a manual performance hatch for myself since then. The fact that this has 100 more horsepower than hers puts in in a perfect spot for my fun driving needs lol.

I have one of these and a '22 Sienna, also with an infant. My kid loves riding in the back, way more than the Sienna. If you want to use a rear facing seat, I highly recommend a rotating car seat. Like an Evenflo revolve360. Will save you a lot of time and open up a lot of space when not in use.

The slotted rotors, high bite brake pads (aka soft material), plus just bigger brakes, causes more brake dust. However its a tradeoff for more braking performance. One thing thats popular for the BMW forums when talking about brake dust, is to switch to Ceramic Pads, and no more brake dust. Just as good performance, but different brake pedal feeling.

@QactisX

Thanks for the great honest take video. Really on the fence between WRX and this. This one would require way fewer (or no) mods to get it to a likeable place. Oon the other hand; the WRX can put subs in the trunk and fit more stuff. I've got a toddler and I plan to have another eventually. I think with the GR I would have to be painfully aware that it's not huge and I'm gonna feel like I'm driving a gocart when a tall person is behind me. On the performance side of things; Torsen diffs, 10x better wheels and tires, 10x better brakes, better trans and steering feel etc makes me want GR way more. I feel much more confident that I would end up paying the cost difference between the 2 cars down the road anyway on maintenance and mods on the WRX. One big one for me is wheels. I REALLY like the wheels on the GR. I wouldn't even change them I like them out the gate. Michelin PS4s are great out the gate. The brakes are great out the gate. On the WRX it's none of those things. Another big thing is the infotainment is better on the GR. I hear nothing but complaints about the laggy "table" in the WRX. I hate lag. I have a $2500 computer cause I like electronics to work smoothly. The GR also has physical controls for HVAC. The WRX only gets stuff like adaptive cruise and lane assist on its top trims, it's standard on the GR. Hard decision but I'm leaning towards getting a used GR to avoid the dealer markups and unobtanium aspect about it. I wouldn't get a used WRX cause the engine and trans are more sensitive to idiots. The GR is more reliable.
@CarQuicks

You hit the nail in the head with your points. One thing I will say is that there are a LOT more MSRP deals for the GRC all around. Join a few FB groups for the GRC and you see the posts. But as you said the foundation for where the GRC begins is better. There is talk about what the motor can handle stock and what mods you need for high power, but that does not take away from what the car can do out the door. This added metrics chasing power are always going to favor how much money you have. And some platform happen to respond at high clips than other models. I test drive a new WRX, but the specialness of the car was missing for me. The GRC filled that void.

@@CarQuicks bro my first manual was a 96 Saturn coupe 2 and I’ve driven fast cars but my current car is an 04 Highlander. More horses is not my priority. That will probably change but from what I’ve read on GR you need to replace the valve springs before you do anything, $200 in parts plus having a shop do it cause I ain’t touching that. Heavier clutch flywheel as well if you’re upping torque then you’re probably fine for a while. I’m willing to bet the GR ECU is a lot smarter about air fuel ratio than WRX as well

Great Video review! I’m even more excited, now, waiting for mine to arrive. It will be exactly like yours, color and pkg specs. Only difficult thing is deciding whether or not to trade in my ‘22 Camry XSE. The video review for that one would be identical as your GR Corolla. $$ may be the deciding factor. Big props on an excellent video. Can’t wait to make one of my own. 🙌🏼

You'll love every minute of owning a GR Corolla! I know right now trade-ins are at all time highs, so for a 22' Camry XSE you may be an a very good position to pull some nice equity out of your current car. Best option is to have open offer of trade in values so your dealer is aware that you know what the market is saying for your trade in.

I love how you love your car. That is the way it should be. I just got my Type R but I’m a big Toyota fan as well and would definitely own a CR Corolla. My regular 2014 Corolla sedan, a 6-speed stick with the 1.8l 4-cylinder engine, definitely feels stronger and shifts better now than new. Toyota is a great car company. My new Corolla GR should arrive next week. I'm glad I chose the Corolla GR over the other cars I considered like the Type R, Type S, Civic SI, Elantra N and even the thrifty Corolla Hybrid SE. Many great cars out there today and prices/mark-ups seem to be coming down.

As far as brake dust, use a good ceramic spray detailer and apply it liberally to the wheels after you wash it next time. It will help manage the brake dust and help make your washes a breeze.

Keep in mind the circuit has brake ducts that the core doesnt have. That makes a big difference on braking performance
@CarQuicks
Жыл бұрын
I’m on the fence with that, as I’ve talked with owners tracking both Core and Circuit and they aren’t reporting a difference in performance of braking. The only difference I can foresee is if you are pushing prolonged track sessions? But again I’ve talked to people running both cars simultaneously, same track, same heat, same time. Not saying there is not a difference, but I wonder if that difference is the upper 1-5%. The standard hardware is the same across all models. The Morizo I believe has a different pad compound.
@Olivia300zx
Жыл бұрын
@CarQuicks I'd definitely say you'll get better longevity with brake ducts cooling the rotors. The stock brakes are so good that you won't get fade until long into a track session so most people wouldn't notice with a short session.

I had an Evo 8. Driving that car I was run off of the interstate twice by heavy trucks and once by a lady in a white Buick. Off in the weeds at interstate speed that car was just as happy as when on tarmac. On one occasion I simply continued in the weeds, accelerated, passed the truck and continued on my way. So, forget the loud exhaust, more clutch eating power, can the GR Corolla do this? If it can it may save your life. As for interior, you sit on a seat, hopefully a Recaro seat. For comfort, nothing else comes even close. Then there's the steering wheel, dash and windshield. Other than the HVAC, which should be very simple to operate, nothing else matters, only the things you touch or use when driving. Hard plastic is great, it means the maker can put that money to use elsewhere in the car.

I haven't personally run the GRC in gravel/rally environments, but from the people that have, its capabilities are right in line with the Evo. And you are right! The simplistic nature of the car, is geared towards how those cars like the Evo, STi, old JDM classics were crafted.

regarding the seat material, I will go so far as to say Leather was considered a high quality material at a point in time when the options were vinyl, or leather, or some itchy burlap type cloth, or a raised felt like closth. compared to those two options, absolutely, leather is the premium product compared to those materials. but then in my 97 GSR? the seats were cloth, and the seats were comfortable. they weren't oppressively hot in the summer (as leather and vinyl would be), and they don't stay cold in the winter like leather does (which pretty much requires heated seats). I had leather in my WRX, and that was the hottest interior I ever experienced on a hot day. living in Houston, in late June through early October, that can be very hot. it took a while for them to get to a suitable sitting temp, and in the cold, I needed the heated seats to not be cold. the cloth seats in my GRC weren't offensively cool in January when we had a few freezing days down here. and so far, we have had 3 weeks back to back of temps over 100 degrees and the seats are not at all a problem to sit in immediately after it's been baking in the sun all afternoon. cloth seats as most cars since the mid 90s have implemented it, in my opinion, is the premium product, and no one can convince me otherwise.
@CarQuicks
Жыл бұрын
You hit it right on the head. There is a perception that leather is the utmost premium option on a car. But thats just what we have been sold. You sit in some of those early Toyota Crowns from Japan and the cloth on those seats is something in between velour, wool, cotton and feel absolutely fantastic. Holds up exceptionally well and offers a better variety of look, as leather is only going to be colored a set of solid colors. You aren't going to get that character of speckled blues, greens on grey you can see in certain cloth seats. Or the shimmering effect of the materials against light. And speaking to the current Texas heatwave here in Houston trying to kill us... (LOL) the seats in the GRC have been amazing. They don't hold heat and even if warm are not causing me to have a sweaty back just from sitting down. Even if they are warm you can cool them down in short time running the A/C.

I appreciate how in-depth you went about this car. I have the opportunity right now to pick up a red circuit edition but the equivalent mark up would be about $12,500 USD and that’s making it a bit of a struggle. Included in the $12,500 is the most expensive extended warranty plan and they want to do the paint protection seat protection and rust proofing 🇨🇦 . I’m trying to see if I can get full PPF on the vehicle included in that mark up and at least that will be an easier way to justify the markup.

@kore996

@@tommygarcia8010 everything right now is still crazy here in Canada. We did make the purchase and significantly reduced the markup. Slightly more than I wanted because we had to buy a 3rd party warranty but I guess we actually get something for some of the additional money. We pick it up on Wednesday and I see on the side badge the Circuit Edition is limited to 181 in Canada. Also we originally stopped by to see a used sienna and saw this in the showroom and was available to buy 🤯. The USED sienna was $10k USD over MSRP and the back seats didn’t fold down to create a flat floor…as you know with your sienna. We wanted to put our large dog in the back but there are too many spots for his feet to fall in to in the sienna. The GR Corolla would only be for emergencies for the dog…and not the primary for the dog and my son. Justification: we got hit with a tornado almost 2 years ago and we were reduced to 1 vehicle (2016 4Runner) since then so we needed another vehicle and have been looking for another vehicle but everything is still crazy overpriced and I struggle to overpay for something BIG TIME so I get what you’re saying. It’s just been so long with only 1 car that if we had to overpay for something at least it was something that checked a lot of boxes with sporty manual and could fit family life if needed and special occasions since that’s our 4Runner’s main job. Anyways, we are excited to get it on Wednesday. Now we are looking for a car seat that would fit in the GR Corolla without being too large and easy to install so we can pop it in and out when needed.
@CarQuicks

Markup is one of those things that many will say don't pay, don't do it... I am a person that considers that people have the means to do a variety of things with their money. I know people that a $10K markup isn't anything for them to be concerned about, but spending time waiting or calling around is more costly to them and their life. The point being is that everyone's circumstances are different. If you do not want to pay a ADM/markup, then don't. But I also say if you can and waiting, spending time researching, driving out of state, calling, etc. is costing you time and money... pay the difference and move on. We all pay a markup on anything we desire or want, you go to the gas station and buy a bag of chips that are marked up because of convenience. You buy food out because its available right when you are hungry and available, but I could tell you go to the grocery store and spend less money for the same burger and have more left over to make. Its all relative. Its doesn't help with dealerships doing as they please, and while you could sit back and say I want abide by their rules, the rules they set, especially here in the USA, is a political battle of billionaires lobbying for dealership, selling control. That fight isn't worth a majority of the populations time. If you can find it at MSRP, do so, but don't kill yourself over it. If you are comfortable with the purchase thats all that matters.
@kore996

@@CarQuicks ya it’s crazy how quickly dealerships went from struggling during the pandemic to finding a way to take advantage of it. I did call around and have been searching for months and even the core editions are selling used for more than we are getting the circuit for. Ok that guy who always looks for a deal but we’ve waited long enough and need to 💩 or get off the 🚽 😂. Then we can just move on because we have other stuff going on in life…like me having a spinal injury. My wife would be driving the GRC majority of the time.
