One cannot just "shake off" depression. I have thought for awhile that she is depressed. She has to know it is okay to take a break, seek help, find her joy again. I hope she can learn this.

Depression or no Gracie doesn't cope well with disappointment. OK there are some deeper issues that need to be worked out but in the immediate term she needs to learn to not just throw it in when she makes a mistake. You can win with a fall if you make people forget you well.

You were right a year ago, and you are right now. It has been heartbreaking to watch Gracie, clearly so talented, be so bedeviled by emotional issues that can't just be sloughed off. Changing coaches so often never solves anything, either. Gracie seems to be addressing those things now, and I hope she will come back confident and in good form. I think most fans want to see her healthy, both physically and emotionally again. She is only 22; there is still time.

People with tara's mentality, telling people to just "snap out" of depression in a condescending manner without a tiny bit of empathy is the absolute worst...like wtf?! you don't just "snap out" of depression and try to shake it off...it's the reason it keeps getting worse in the first place...smdh...what gracie needs is support not more pressure...

You look at the landed elements - no one skating today looks as beautiful. The lutz near the end of the program perfectly positioned, straight in the air, great height, lands straight back, no hook to check the rotation. She's medaled a lot. But, not as much as her skating deserves. I love to watch her.

Coming here after listening to to Gracie reading her autobiography - the lack of empathy from Tara and Johnny is startling and shocking. Johnny is better but still…. I am stranger but long time figure skating fan even I find this 2010s commentary shocking 😊
@L1623VP

I disagree. Aside from physical training, the other half of competition is mental toughness. Commentators have every right and responsibility to also comment on that side of an athlete's performance because it's just as important as the physical training. No matter how well-trained an athlete is, it won't matter if their head isn't in the right place. If Gracie was struggling emotionally so terribly, then perhaps she shouldn't have been competing but taken a year off after 2016 Worlds to tend to those needs. I hear no disrespect in Tara's or Johnny's remarks, just practical observation. After all, they're commentators not counselors. It's just frustrating to see talented skaters never reach their full potential because of mental/emotional/confidence issues that have nothing to do with their skating ability. Jeremy Abbott and Sasha Cohen are two other examples. If they could have gotten out of their own way, they could have been champions. That's all Tara and Johnny are expressing.

@@L1623VP Tara literally said to shake it off without having any clue what was going on. Tara was just flat out wrong. If someone had told Tara to just shake it off how she was feeling about all the problems were was having getting pregnant it would have also been heartless. Tara would NEVER say this type of thing again. She has grown a lot but this commentary was horrible. I have no idea why you are defending it.
@L1623VP

@@ragepie292 But an athlete has to "shake it off" to be able to compete, at least for as long as their part in the competition lasts. Tara's emotions connected to her problems conceiving is not a proper comparison. She wasn't competing for skating championship titles; Gracie was. The USFSA and US skating team weren't depending on Tara to place high enough to get more US ladies qualified for Worlds; they were depending on Gracie. Gracie's emotional state and how it affected her performance affected others. That's what makes the difference. If Gracie felt she couldn't perform her best because of emotional issues, she should have stepped aside and let someone else compete in her place. It's the right thing to do, not just for herself, but for the sake of US figure skating and the skating team. In many areas of life, we are called upon to put "mind over matter", and sports is definitely one of them.

You are correct. However, Johnny Weir was very complimentary, honest but also with respect. That said, once on the ice, have to go for it as best you can. Certainly Weir had his highs and some lows. He understands what he is talking about. Not sure Tara, who left amateur competition at age 15, may not have experienced much disappointment or challenges in her young years.

Yeah, she is just totally disengaged here. After she puts those guards on she walks the opposite way of Frank, seemingly uncaring toward what he might have to say. Now, I don't think she was purposely doing anything disrespectful or out of apathy, but all last season and certainly what we've seen this year is evidence of her being really fundamentally unhappy. I do hope she's able to get back to form for herself, not just for her skating.

Neither Johnny or Tara knew that Gracie was "depressed" so, the comments are outside of knowledge they had at that time. Also, Gracie to this day does not own her part in her unraveling. She like a lot of people point the finger at evvvveryone else except themselves because, as you can see, a fortress of strangers will support her. Shame that Frank Carrol went out coaching a skater that truly did not appreciate him.
