We are excited to share with you our new music video for Grady Nichol’s song “Tulsa.” Last year we partnered with Tulsa Office of Film, Music, Arts & Culture to create a music video that showcased both the city of Tulsa and the arts.
Grady reflects:
“Really there were two basic ideas I wanted to accomplish with it. The first was really to showcase what a beautiful city we have - the cool downtown architecture and the historic art and music venues we have in the community. The second was to tell my personal story of being able to play in all of these venues - Cain's, the Tulsa Theater, Tulsa Performing Arts Center, etc. I've got multiple stories with each venue - whether it was opening for Luciano Pavarotti at the ORU Mabee Center, playing with Peter Cetera at the Tulsa Theater - I firmly believe that I had opportunity to do things here in Tulsa that I would not have had if I lived somewhere else”
Grady Nichols dream of a music career started in Tulsa and he’s been able to live out that vision as a saxophone player. Every year families from all over Tulsa gather for The Grady Nichols Christmas Show, this past year held at the ORU Mabee Center.
“I remember seeing David Sanborn in concert when I was in high school at the River Parks floating amphitheater and that show changed my life. I was like, "This is what I want to do!”.’
When Grady sat down to write the song “Tulsa,” his goal was to create a song that captures the spirit of "Tulsa" - both the people and the musical history, trying to tap into that Tulsa sound as kind of a tribute to how good Tulsa has been to me. The song is a fusion of a lot of styles that represent the broad musical palette that is the Tulsa music scene past and present.
Being called a great singer on the saxophone, Grady approaches playing the sax to sound like a singer. Grady views himself as a saxophonist who plays many varying styles. He is frequently told “I never liked jazz until I heard you” as his music captures the hearts and ears of everyone that listens.
