During his time as England manager the press sensed a kind of "nice guy" and tried to ruin him, if you ever saw the impossible job documentary, I thought he was a decent manager that the media simply wanted to crucify

PA28 I'm not slating Graham Taylor as a person at all, he seemed like a really decent guy. Talking about his tenure as England manager only though, he may have had some hard luck with injuries, but that's part and parcel. The major problem was that the whole style he had England playing in wasn't sophisticated enough for international level. I'm not just blaming him either - people venerate England's team in 1990, with justification, but they were, to put it bluntly, shit in Euro '88. Italia '90 was really a one off at the time, mainly because they had a young Gazza, a world class striker in Lineker still doing the business, and Bobby Robson experimented with a more flexible sweeper system, instead of a flat back four. When GT came in, it was back to the direct, 80's style English football. English teams hadn't been playing in Europe since 1985 either, and had lost that vital experience of European competition. When Venables and then Hoddle came in, they brought some tactical nous to the team that had been lacking.

Comes across as a real nice guy and the bad luck he had with England regarding the players he had unavailable through injuries and such was a big factor in failing to qualify for USA 94 along with a referee who wanted holland to win

Perhaps Taylor was the man to get the best from Gerrard and Lampard judging by his ground-breaking revelation that when "one of you needs to go forward, one of you sits in" which he shares with Gazza here...

I hate sophisticated football too. Players like Emlyn Hughes for England only ever passed the ball walking and sideways. TV off.

a good club manager not good england boss Terry venables or Howard Kendall would have been better choices to replace bobby robson

As much as I always liked Taylor and as successful a club manager and man manger he was, I agree with you. Taylor was not the right choice at the time and in Ireland his appointment was considered misjudged by the sports press & TV pundits. A good man and a good manager in the wrong job at the wrong time with a sadly inevitable result, which I took no pleasure in seeing happen.

Kendall, Venables and Clough were the 3 widely anticipated managers. Many didn't realise that Clough wasn't the force of the late 70s and early 80s. Drink had the better of him and Kendall's move to Spain signalled the end of his midas touch. The FA were never going to appoint Venables because of his dodgy reputation.

Taylor was old fashioned and moaned a lot but he was not as bad as people made out. He inherited a team on a high after Italia 90 where many retired and had to start the team again from scratch and the players available to him were not good enough. He never really had the luck of the green either and the media make any England boss life a misery. He also never slipped up against weak teams, which is why I rate Steve McClaren as possibly the worst ever England manager so far. The thing I would call him out on was his love for kick-and-rush football which is why England fail so much.
