We visited Gran Canaria and Gibraltar, two ports of call whilst cruising on Cunard's Queen Elizabeth. We went on an excursion to Maspalomas and Puerto Mogan in Gran Canaria. We then had a very short visit to Gibraltar.
Maspalomas is a very popular tourist town at the southernmost part of Gran Canaria. Now that the island is opening up to overseas travellers, its coast welcomes more and more visitors on a regular basis. With endless sand dunes, upscale hotels, and beautiful sandy beaches and attractions, there is no doubt that the island is a desirable European destination in the Canaries. The Maspalomas Lighthouse, the town’s famous lighthouse first lighted the ocean over 120 years ago. The Sand Dunes of Maspalomas was declared a protected landscape by the UNESCO.
Puerto Mogan on the other hand, is on the south-west coast of Gran Canaria and thought to have the best climate in the world. It is the most picturesque resort on the island of Gran Canaria. The golden beach is of sand imported from the Sahara. The newer development behind the beach offers great views up the valley towards the mountains or over the beach and of the sea, cliffs and marina.
Puerto de Mogan has lots of excellent restaurants serving local fish and other Canarian and international specialities. There is a large open-air market on Fridays which fills the two plazas on the marina side of Puerto Mogan and the area behind the beach.
