Performed by Svetoslav Costoff on the 21st of May 2020 in the Ursula-Mamlok-Hall in Berlin.
Mauro Giuliani (born in Barletta in 1781; died on the 8th of May 1829 in Naples) was an Italian composer and guitarist who is nowadays considered among his peers as the "father of the classical guitar". By the age of eighteen, Giuliani was already giving concerts in Vienna as a celebrated virtuoso. His works form the core of a classical guitar technique. L. v. Beethoven was able to get to know the guitar as a concert instrument through Giuliani and has described it as a "small orchestra". The Gran Sonata Eroica op. 150 is a typical example of this. Unfortunately, he could not finish this penultimate opus work - Giuliani was not able to write a 2nd and 3rd movement for this sonata before his death.
