In May 1988, the 5th generation S13 Silvia swept away the market share from the Honda Prelude and gained incredible popularity. It captured fans not just as a 'Dating Car', but also for being a fun to drive, compact FR.
The first and foremost reason for its popularity was its styling. Its refined coupé body was cutting-edge and had a flamboyance that seemed to epitomise the buoyant economy. Of course its driving performance was another major factor. It was agile and sporty and the price was affordable. This car met every need of the young generation in its day.
Initially, the engine was a 1.8 L CA18, which was replaced with the SR20 series 2.0 L, DOHC inline-4 in later models after a minor change. The premium K's model was turbocharged and produced 202.1 BHP and 274 Nm torque, while the Q's and J's were naturally aspirated and produced 138 BHP and 178 Nm torque. The front suspension utilised MacPherson struts, with multi-link suspension in the rear. A 4-wheel steering system called the Super HICAS was also available as an option.
Accelerating in the 1,170 kg, 202.1 BHP turbocharged K's was exhilarating and due to the amazing balance of the chassis, drivers could truly feel connected to the road. There are many drivers in Japan who first learned what drifting is while driving this car. Another characteristic of the Silvia was that it had a huge following as a tuning base car. The CA18DET engine was very tough and was able to withstand over 295.8 BHP when tuned. There was even a period of time where almost all cars parked outside tuning shops in Japan were S13 Silvias.
Daijiro Yoshihara, aka 'Daichan', is a Japanese drift driver who became Formula D's champion in 2011. He has been competing in Formula D since its initiation in 2004 and this "Falken Tires/Turn 14 Distribution BRZ '17" is the machine he drove in the Formula Drift series in 2017.
The body is based on the Rocket Bunny V3 aero kit, with various parts replaced with carbon. Packed with technology to raise its performance as a competition drift machine, the engine has been swapped to something you wouldn't expect from the demure exterior of the BRZ: a 7 litre turbocharged V8. Approximately 986 BHP of power is controlled through a Motec M800, making this an extreme machine able to drift faster and further than the rest.
In order to best match the driving performance required in drifting, the transmission is a 4 speed. Of course the drivetrain and suspension are reinforced and the brakes use 6 pot callipers in the front and 4 pot callipers in the rear.
Though he was unable to win the 2017 championship, Daichan came 6th overall in the series in the number 9 car and gave an incredible performance and a show of presence to crowds of spectators that gathered for the events.
In case someone thinks this is a drift race, just because I'm using the engine swap from the Subaru BRZ Drift Car, I have terrible news for you: it's not! :D
You may see some occasional and very shy drifts from the Nissan Silvia Q's (what a name!), since this sleeper car is equipped with the turbocharged V8 from the Subaru, with its astounding high performance figures: 1232 BHP / 983 Kg / 1404 Nm! :)
However, I'm a terrible drifter and the same can be said about GT7's AI, as it cannot perform any decent drifting with the Subaru, either! :P
Anyway, the Subaru's performance figures are, as expected, the same as the Silvia's, apart from the weight: 1232 BHP / 1433 Kg / 1404 Nm.
This race involves 2 Silvias against 2 BRZs (one of the Silvias is mine). Such extreme drifting power is unfortunately wasted by the 2 noobs in the race: me and GT7's AI... :P
Although you will barely notice the drifts, the Alsace circuit offers a generous number of curves and it's quite a tortuous track, so the fun is guaranteed! ;)
See how a slow and bad looking car like this particular Silvia can upgrade its image to become quite flashy and, most of all, reveal itself as an impressive power beast! :)
