I was there too at this very concert at Forum!! With two of my sisters and friends, they knew nothing about GFR but I watched them "head bang" like there was no tomorrow! We drove home with our ears ringing until the next day. They all told me they were so glad I "convinced them to go with me' as I didn't want to go alone, they said it was the best concert they ever went too.

Each one of these guys was a master of their instruments, they were blowing Zepplin away when they opened for them. It got so bad (good) Zepplins manager pulled the power plug and kicked them off the tour. They sold out Shea Stadium faster than the Beatles, and in my humble opinion if greed and jealousy and stabbing Mark in the back didn't happen they would've been as big if not bigger than any of the top bands from that time. Bigger than the stones, the Who, bigger than zepplin etc... It's great that it seems today's younger folks are discovering GFR and realising what we from that era already know, that these 3 guys were the best, the best musicianship, they always gave 110% in their live performances no matter how big the crowd was. I was amazed when I heard the 1970 live album and the resurgence now of their music is more than deserved. They should've been a band everyone knows, like Zepplin, rather than a band most people just heard of. The most underrated band in music history.

I'm from Detroit and grew up hearing local stuff a lot. And in no way is Grand Funk better than Zep. But to each his own. What hurt GFR was Farner didn't get high in any way so he expected a lot out of everyone else. Same as Ted. Kinda "We can get more done if you can pay attention." Sometimes that rubs musicians the wrong way.

I saw them live in 1972 at the Hollywood Sportatotium in South Florida. Even seeing them now brings back vivid memories of how unbelievably loud it was just in front about 12 rows from the stage. Every time Don Brewer hit the bass drum it felt as though you were punched in the chest. I'd give anything to relive that time and felt that sensation again.

This concert was performed December 23rd, 1972 at Madison Square Garden, NYC, in support of their self-produced "Phoenix" album. Earlier that year, they'd fired their original producer/manager, Terry Knight. He showed up the day of this concert with local sheriffs to stop the show (a fundraiser for Phoenix House--a drug rehab center), by vengefully confiscating their equipment. Knight finally agreed to let the show go on....but took all their gear afterwards, returning it in damaged condition (according to bassist, Mel Shacher.) GFR would then go on to hire Todd Rundgren as producer....and their second career as an AM hit-maker was underway. Rising from the ashes indeed!

The very first full length album I bought was their second, self titled album, Grand Funk. This was 1970 I think, maybe late '69. I had been buying 45s, but no one inspired me to buy their album until my friend introduced me to Grand Funk. I still have that album, and a few more of theirs, including Survival, which doesn't get the accolades it deserves.

IMHO the greatest, the GREATEST American Rock n Roll band ever! There was a reason when they were the opening act for no less than Led Zepplin that Zepplin's manager/promoter after watchin' the crowd respond to GFR went to the stage management and insisted they cut off their mics/sound and remove them from the stage... resulting in a near crowd riot. Or why Shea Stadium officials concerned the bleachers were going to collapse and considered halting the concert... then smartly concluded the ensuing riot would be worse decided to take a chance and let the play on and the crowd go wild cheering, jumping up and down like wild animals. Good decision officials. :->
