For all my Funk friends! I’m getting personal messages and direct emails, asking questions about this video, so I have to add some details here. First of all, this is not a Maysles film. It was shot June 25 1971 during the European leg of GFR appearances (supporting the Survival album) Unfortunately, only a small portion of that show was filmed. NOW ABOUT ALBERT MAYSLES (God rest his soul): Being very kind and warm person, he always responded to my emails and in record time but has never made it clear to me if his 1-hour finished Grand Funk film was footage from Shea Stadium, Cobo Hall, Syndrome, or any other of their 1971 shots. Had assure me that he was in touch with GFR members (didn’t tell me which one-s) for a possible release, but nothing ever came up, as we all know.
By most accounts, the probable song list at Shea was:
Are You Ready
Jam (a.k.a. Footstompin’ Music)
Paranoid
I’m Your Captain/Closer To Home
Hooked On Love
Get It Together
Mark Says Alright
T.N.U.C.
Heartbreaker (unsure on that one…)
Inside Looking Out
Gimme Shelter (encore)
ABOUT THE SHEA STADIUM MOVIE :
A legendary GFR fan who has a copy of it and prefers anonymity, has sent me accurate description of it (and I deeply thank him for that)
I want here to make clear that I’m talking about the ~55 min. version that Terry Knight was shopping around in late 1971 and 1972. (Not the Maysles or the extended film versions)
Introduction to the movie:
Interview with Chip Monk (head of stage crew, who also did Woodstock) and a few press/reporters at Shea Stadium
Cut scenes to the May 3 Press Conference at New York’s Gotham Hotel with Terry Knight, Sid Bernstein and GFR
Cool scene with GFR getting off jet and into limo (against audio of I’m Your Captain/Closer To Home)
More scenes as the stage is built (against audio of I’m Your Captain/Closer To Home)
Scenes of crowd filing into Shea, pre-show (against audio of I’m Your Captain/Closer To Home)
Movie credit (production)
Cool scenes of GFR, Knight, Cavaliere and Bowles getting on helicopters to fly into Shea Stadium. (Because it was too windy that night, they preferred the near La Guardia airport, instead of descending onto the Shea field, for security reasons)
Limo drive onto Shea Stadium grass area and shuttle to stage (against audio of 2001: A Space Odyssey)
Presentation of the band over enormous cheering by the crowd “….that’s from world of the New York and the whole world…. Grand-Funk-Railroad!”
Songs:
Are You Ready (unstopped cheering from the crowd during entire song)
Paranoid (Mark shirtless from that point on)
I’m Your Captain (different scenes at the intro and middle parts of the song, compared to the officially released video in Greatest Hits cd/dvd compilation)
T.N.U.C. (only Don’s drum solo some of it in slow motion and Mel’s cowbell/maracas - Mark’s drum part of the show. (The beginning and the last part of the song are cut-out)
Inside Looking Out (when Mark cried the usual “…do you feel alright…” and during his harmonica part, the bleachers of Shea Stadium were moving up and down intensely!)
Stage exit to 2001 theme, getting into limo
