My vote is to make the wall panelling higher than the bed frame - I find that a lower wall panelling is more typically used in a colonial style of room decor. Also, (I know you didn't ask) simple wrought iron bed frames would look wonderful in your beautiful rooms.

You have done an amazing job on the coach house. For the bed room paint I would try and match two colours from the stone work ,lighter colour on plaster board and medium colour on the panels. The panel height I would match up to the panel on the doors ,so it all lines up. Just a thought.

Maybe gauge the height of paneling on upper floor, with an existing form in the doors or the windows. This will create a uniform "been there always" appearance to the room. Love the introduction sequence, really worked the imagination. What I find astonishing is the amount of wealth the past owners must of had. The staffing that was involved and where they accumulated their wealth- sugar plantations in the French Caribbean ? Slave trade ? Trade with the Ottoman Empire? Amazing And then Suddenly the World Wars and everything came to a complete halt Even after the French Revolution, French Aristocracy apparently continued…🧐 Interesting and Loved the Carriage House - going to be amazing Thank you for sharing 🙂.

just a lovely vlog; thankyou. we renovated a barn and put the plugs in the floor and wiring through the pointing with spots which are operated remotely so we didn't have to put in switches and leads on the walls. Lower panelling... higher is reminiscent of the 1920's? On the other hand.. if it was panelled to the ceiling - that would be totally in keeping with the age of the building.. The pinky white you would love is Little Greene's China Clay Distemper.. available in France or by post.. I have it everywhere and it covers anything with a lovely lime softness - but you have probably already seen it..

Thinking about the area around the blocked up door, which is damp and partially underground: would it be feasible to pull the soil back from that wall of the house on the outside, creating a medium sized terrace? With the soil held back by a retaining wall, possibly with steps in it leading up, and connecting to a walk in the larger landscape? Below the terrace could be a serious bit of drainage, leading away at least 20 feet to a dry well, for detention of rain water to give it time to soak into the groundwater. You mention that this area was raised in larger landscape works 100+ years ago, which would probably mean it isn't solid bedrock but rather fill. You'd need to do the excavation works in an exploratory way, before picking a logical location for the dry well that would both fit in with other plans, and give you positive drainage (downward slope). This would also give you a lovely outdoor area for tables, in nice weather. I'd suggest a really decent sized space, possibly the width of the building at that end, brought out in a semi-circle half as wide (making the door the origin of the radius.) If you do make a retaining wall, keep it battered back, and with drainage behind the bottom half of it, drawing water off to the side, rather than letting water accumulate behind it and seep through, which might eventually force the wall apart when it freezes. That wall could be a lovely sun catcher, with pretty flowering shrubs of an arching character, little roses, ornamental oregano, dianthus, clematis, etc, and really add to the charm of the dining area, even from inside in the winter, if the door is glass.
@Chroniclesofrosieres
3 жыл бұрын
You've basically voiced Marc's plan for the area - he's been desperate to do this! We will definitely be removing the fill in the garden because it would previously have been a terrace. The difficulty comes as to whether to make this a door, a window, or leave it as it is! My concerns surround the indoors and any limitations it would put on use once there's another entrance, especially at times when we open it as a cafe. I've been in cafes where there are always people weaving in and out of different doors and round tables, and it's often not so comfortable! But we will reflect for sure!

@deba4537
2 жыл бұрын
@@Chroniclesofrosieres I've felt buffeted in cafes, too, but having the option of a door doesn't mean you have to use it in an annoying way. It's up to you to sculpt the flow of traffic. Depending on the day, the crowd and the weather, the door could be open, or not used at all. An open door could have an appropriate space around it on the inside and the outside, with a planned and defined traffic flow, subtly controlled by the placement of simple useful or pretty objects to define access / no access. For example, you might try a convenient table set to the side of the door for service of extra water, s&p, napkins, etc., with a bus tray below it, under a cloth. Or a large pretty potted plant could be used, or an extra chair or two. Or an interesting old object that evokes the past use of the building. The locations of tables and chairs, and open spaces between them, must also be quite deliberate and build the space as you wish it to be. If I were you, I'd draw up some versions of terrace and interior, planning seating and traffic options before doing any physical building work, so your next efforts would all be useful. (Sorry for the detail; I'm a garden designer and ex-caterer and sometimes get carried away...)
