Grandfather Mountain rises tall above the Blue Ridge Mountains at a whopping 5,946 feet tall. The mountain is closest to the city of Linville, NC near the Blue Ridge Parkway, spanning three different counties: Avery, Caldwell, and Watauga Counties. Within Grandfather Mountain's nature preserve, many unique things exist: a subalpine climate with unique biodiversity, a mile-high swinging bridge, an animal habitat with bears, otters, and bald eagles, and extensive hiking trails that run the ridgelines of the mountain. One of the most popular trails, the Grandfather Trail, begins at the parking lot near the swinging bridge and meanders along the ridgelines to Macrae Peak and Calloway Peak. It is dotted with several ladders and cables that aid hikers in reaching the steepest and most exposed parts of the trail.
