Ans- A small mango plant was growing alone in that rocky island. So grandfather thought if one can sprung here then others can too. This made grandfather plant saplings on that rocky island.

Ans- As the Second World War began, the author was sent to a boarding school so he had to leave Dehradun.

a) Why do we need trees? List three reasons that grandfather gives.
Ans- We all know how much the trees are important for this whole world including animals and mankind.Trees are the great supplier of oxygen that we breathe in.If we don't plant a few trees ourselves a time will come when the world will become one great desert.
According to grandfather, 1.We should plant trees for the forest, and for the animals and birds who live here and need more food and shelter. 2. To keep the desert away, to attract rain, for fruits and flowers, leaf and seed we should plant more trees.
3. And for timber too we should plant trees.
b) Describe what the author saw when he went back to the island.
Ans- Several years later, when the author returned to Dehradun and walked out of town towards the riverbed, he looked across the dry water course and his eyes were immediately caught by the breathtaking red blooms of the coral blossom. The island was looking like a small green paradise in contrast with the dry river bed. He went up to the trees and the trees seemed to know the author. They whispered among themselves and beckoned him nearer. Looking around, he noticed that other smaller trees, plants, and grasses had sprung up under their protection.
