Poor Duke, being left behind like that. And, I bet there was many a time where Falcon/Sir Handel and Stuart/Peter Sam would try to explain to the others on the railway, but things kept getting in the way each book: Aluminium Works Project: Likely didn't want an old engine so that was out of the question. Four Little Engines: Rheanes is on overhaul, Skarloey was likely next. And, low and behold, his overhaul was pushed forward when he rescued Sir Handel's passengers. On top of that, they didn't know Skarloey or Rheanes too well yet. The Little Old Engine: Rusty arrives, Peter Sam's accident, Duncan arrives, Ada, Jane, Mabel, Gertrude, Millicent and Cora were all built/restored at Crovans Gate, Skarloey returns, TV train, all at once! They'd probably had to gain trust with the newcomers first. Gallant Old Engine: Rheanes comes back, and now Sir Handel and Peter Sam have to establish trust with him. Mountain Engines: The story of Godred probably spooked Sir Handel too much and dwindled his trust in Skarloey and Rheanes for a while. Very Old Engines: The last story, need I explain?

Here is the foreword in the book. The first part is the main basis of Duke’s lost and found story: Dear Friends, An engine lost in the South American jungle was found after 30 years. A tree had grown through its chimney and hornets nested in its firebox. When mended it gave good service for 30 more years. "The Duke" was lost too; not in the jungle, but in his own shed which a landslide had buried. Not long ago he was dug out and mended. His own railway had been pulled up, so he is now at the Thin Controller's. The opening to one of the best overall-presented books by Awdry. The thing that really sparks me about it is how much we are told yet there is a lot still that is implied but not revealed. I like to think it was something Awdry wanted to leave open-to-interpretation. No. 2's fate could on one hand be taken as just something to bring up a sense of being foiled for getting too mighty, but it could be taken as a guy who genuinely believed in American patriotism only to suffer the consequences of getting too far out of a comfort zone, mirroring a reality situation faced by immigrants. The fleeting direct reference to War is suitably chilling in the overall proceedings. Regards, Samuel Farris.

Now, in the fourth season of the TV show, the show crew had this book be told by Thomas, which to me doesn't make no sense to have a young character tell a story about engines he has never met or even heard of. Why couldn't they had a older character, such as Edward, or Skarloey, or clearly Peter Sam and Sir Handel (who were the characters in those stories) tell the stories in those exact episodes instead of Thomas? To be canonical, it just doesn't seem very good to have Thomas be the one narrating the story.
