The eight lane Granville Bridge opened in stages in 1954 to replace an earlier swing span bridge. It was to be part of a freeway network that was never built. It is now being reduced to four lanes of traffic, with two for bicycles and pedestrians. At the north end demolition is required to create a new intersection with traffic signals. This required detouring transit routes onto adjacent streets to use Howe and Seymour ramps. Advance turn traffic signals have been added to speed up traffic.
