Well done video, Not sure why the business side of design isn't put out there more. It's not fun but integral. If you want to make it as a graphic designer you need to master being a accountant, promoter and negotiator first for some reason

@@Dreadlabs thanks man. Recently I came to the conclusion on how charging so little can harm you and the industry. I have a full time job doing design but quit freelance on the side because of it.

This is really helpful, thank you Tom! I was wondering what you use to share a mood-board with a client? Google doc, google jam, etc... I've been wanting to do this in a way that the client can interact with and upload their own images too.

Hey! I sometimes use Pinterest if I want to allow my clients to add in something, but sometimes I feel upfront that the client isn't really interested in that. In that case I usually just make a moodboard and send is as a PDF. There's a super easy way to download your Pinterest moodboard as images, it's in my "5 ways I find inspiration + some moodboard tips!" video!

It feels hard to price accordingly these days when they can just use stuff like Canva or Squarespace. I find myself lowering my rates lately to keep up. Yeah the work they will receive from those sites is not as high quality as what we can make from scratch as designers, but my average client is not smart enough to see/know the difference. Thoughts?

Interesting point. You see, the thing is I try to make stuff that’s not easy to recreate with canva or with any freelancer on Fiverr. Certain album covers of even logo’s aren’t easy to make and that’s where your strength should lie I think!

don’t undercut yourself. if they care about the quality of the design they will be willing to pay for it. if they don’t and think canva is something they want to explore because it’s cheaper, you should end up dropping them because the design won’t really matter to them anyways.

damn craziest part of this was finding out your rent was €400 a month, here in the states studios in any larger cities are $1200 at LEAST.

My actual rent for my appartment is 1100 but I share that cost with my girlfriend, and the dutch government has something that roughly translates to “rental allowance”, where you get some money if your rental price and income are a certain number, so my personal share is 400

Whoops, I miscalculated a little bit. I have both as an annual subscription but C4D is €60 a month and Octane €25 (without a GPU limit). But here are the links: www.maxon.net/en/buy home.otoy.com/render/octane-render/subscriptions/#enterprise

Octane fee is what it is no way to get around it. But if you have A student identification card photo with valid expiration date you can get Maxon C4D for $3usd per year. Have to dig to find it, they make it hard to find. I use blender + cycles, which is 100% free, and am way more stoked on my blender/cycles stuff then when I have used c4d octane. Blender also has an insane amount of tutorials about it literally anything.
