Thank you for taking the time to do those 8 week progress updates! I'm guessing the mowing got easier and easier and easier as the weeks went on. I'm doing the same and this makes it real. I didn't think to dethatch, I tilled 2 large sections and was exhausted. I bought this old house and unfortunately not only is the yard grass incredibly thick, I'm strapped with mowing 2 huge 1000+ city sidewalks with ugly weedy swales that I must 'maintain' and pay taxes on. So I tilled one city section and a part of my front yard till dust did us part, but I was beat the crap up. Seeding soon (can't with days of pouring rain that'll wash my seeds down the slope & away.) Was not looking forward to ripping backyards & that other city section. SO! Thatching, seeding, and biding my time with easier mowing as it grows - without dying - is very encouraging!

Adding clover is a great idea and will help over time. But for immediate improvement, start cutting whatever is growing, very high at 4". An even trim at 4" looks as good as an even trim at 1.5", AND taller grass limits weed growth, encorages root development (reducing the need for water), and you likely won't need to bag clippings.

I put in a micro clover lawn in my front yard a couple years ago. Now thinking of adding some rye grass in. I don’t even mow, has a lush wild happy natural look. Only down side is, a couple times a year the clover seems to die back, which is why I’m thinking of adding some sort of grass. I’m in California (drought, water restrictions), I should probably just put in rocks and let clover grow wild between.

It looks good, I'm currently trying to convert the grass portion of my back yard into a micro clover yard. I put a little bit of micro clover and constantly watered my back yard, the micro clover is sprouting, but in some areas the weeds are taking over. Should I kill the weeds directly with weed poison and then in 2 weeks over seed? What should I do about these weeds so that I can get the clover to take over?
@scottjones1905
2 жыл бұрын
As I mentioned, in hindsight I would have used a weed killer in advance so I ended up with grass and clover only. Now that it has been in the 90's for weeks, I am 90% clover/weed and a lot of dead grass. If you aren't too committed, I'd take the Summer/Fall to kill off weeds and do a clover overseed in the Fall. Planting clover in the heat of Summer is not going to yield good results.

Micro clover doesn't grow past 2 inches. That's why everybodyw buying them recently and they become expensive like it $40 a pound. For Seeds. You never have to mow it but when you mix it with grass, you do have to. (grass). if you buy low growing grass they mix perfectly with the micro clover because they stay the same height and the micro clover helps it look full.
@mikemcgarvey3584

Clover spreads faster than most grasses which means edging has to be done more often. I suggest using clover in the center of the lawn and avoid planting it near the edges to cut down on maintenance. Most artificial edging looks tacky, especially a row of rocks outlining a bed. That's high maintenance!

I tried micro clover. It's a decent, but when you mix it in with standard grass that grows like normal, you end up having a mow it, which clips it. And putting an area of nothing but micro clover if you walk over it, you crush it. I found through my own personal experience that it's easier to just put it on centipede grass that doesn't grow tall and you don't have to mow. The only thing is at the micro clover blends in with the grass.
@scottjones1905

Yes, with a mix of grass and clover you still have to mow which I don't mind. I am just looking for something that stays green and full with less work than grass.

May I ask how did your centipede grass and micro clover coexist? Last season I threw out regular, white dutch clover and it did alright/played nice with the centipede grass until the North Florida heat kicked in and most all the clover died off. So I'm wondering if microclover, being smaller, will do better in our heat/humidity down here...
@mountain.spider
11 ай бұрын
@@jester9159 micro clover isn’t the same. It’s more expensive like $300 for 5 pound bag last time I checked. Centipede grass with micro clover is better than white clover. White clover is larger more hyper aggressive. Micro clover is smaller about the same size as centipede so they can coexist. The thing is. You have to get the established with water for at least about six or seven months to one year. Period it’s drop resistant after it’s established, which is normally one full year. So water occasionally.
@mountain.spider

@@jester9159 basically Plant, the micro clover in cool weather so that it can integrate by the time Summer hits. It should be one full year and already settled in. I’m in West Palm Beach which is 10 A but heat can kill it but you have to plant it in cooler weather so when Summer hits, it’s basically settled in you still have to water it every couple days but afterwards you should be fine.

@mountain.spider Yes, I'm aware it's not the same and actually have a 5lb bag of microclover on the way. Not $300 though so not sure what brand you went with. It was expensive, yes. Like $75. But if it does better than regular, white dutch then that's good to know. 👍 Thank you for the response.

I tried that also for about 7/8 months had similar problems, growing nicely, filled in the area but the moment I realized that if you step on any crushes it, I realize it's not for me. Better to mix with low growing grass like centipede grass. Zero mowing. If you end up mixing it with standard grass, you clip it when you have to mow it and then it loses one of the biggest points (no mowing). When mixed with low grow/no mow grass it blends in. I think that would be great for areas where nobody would be walking on but if you have to get to Bush for cutting or grab a hose etc, It deforms it when you walk on it.

Greensboro. It holds up the same as grass/natural white clover. No better/no worse. My original clover seeding was done in Spring 2022. It performed ok but overall I wasn't impressed. I overseeded in Fall of 2022 so this Spring (and all of 2023) will tell the tale. My theory is that a Fall seeding allows the clover to get a better start to compete in the Spring.
