This is, hands down, the best instructional video I have ever seen. I have struggled with “Deal” for as long as I can remember. You made it “click” for me, and I thank you.

Deal is essentially Georgia On My Mind at a faster tempo. Jerry wrote this in 1971 when he was playing Georgia with Merl Saunders, so I always suspected he nicked it from there.

Dude! Totally! It references a lot of the ragtime progressions but I was always thinking it was something specific. Thank you for sharing that. 👍

@@jasondarling If you think of the Georgia melody when soloing in Deal it gives you fresh ideas since the phrasing leaves room in different spaces than you would think. This is one tune you can practice playing 'through' the changes, aiming a couple of chords down the line and starting midway in the measures and kind of cycling through. During the pandemic I made backing tracks in garage band just to keep my chops up and after 1/2 hour nonstop deal choruses you really start seeing some interesting connections.

Thanks for another one dude! This was THE lesson that took me over the edge to stop being scared of 'playing over chords.' For some reason it finally clicked with me that it's not such a big *deal*. Starting from the simplest form of the arps and already being able to hear the solo come out really hit home. I was afraid of the commitment to learn/become familiar enough with the chords of a song to be able to see them clearly enough under my fingers. I realized that as long as I like the song, that is a totally worthwhile, if not necessary, investment!

So great to hear this! Thank you. I always strayed away from internalizing the chords as well. It seemed like a chore in a weird way. I remember reading a interview with Leslie west once and his advice was always learn the chords of the song first. It seems obvious but somehow we just want to get “right to the good stuff” I guess. 👍
