I remember sneaking into Winterland this night, the closing, NRPS, Blues Brothers, Dead. Back when acid was not only good it was still great. Fantastic show, I will never forget it, breakfast at dawn. Afterwards we went back up to the roof for a champagne toast to the ol place, home away from home, Winterland. Gone but never forgotten.

34 shows from 1970 to 1994. First time I was 3 and remember “ clove” cigarettes! I have the little tie dye t shirt my mother bought. I have seen many bands in my life and enjoyed most. I still go to The old Dead when I need some recharging. After Jerry pasted I don’t listen to any songs after that. Thank goodness for all the material before that. I will be 57 this month and still listen to the Dead every single day. Always amazing to me

Gene, those were such good days. And i hate to admit it, but when he died, what the Dead movement was trying to do was still in its infancy died with Jerry. The first time i came to a Dead show, maybe i won some tickets over the phone, i don't remember. I had a very scary situation because i lost my car, and i was not even on hallucinogens yet!but in the midst of it, the dead community pulled through for me. I was never alone. And that is the single most important thing to me among them. I was never alone despite how lonely i may have felt at any given moment. I had to renew myself, and this song was it letting go of that stress and taking a new perspective. I miss Jerry so much, and the fact that in that day, whatever my political or religious belief, i could be judged as a fellow human being, with a different opinion, instead of as a criminal.

The end of my favorite era next to the Pig Pen blues driven one. Jerry is in charge and in top shape blowing our minds! Later when Keith and Donna left so did the alchemy IMHO and I moved on though I still loved to see Jerry in the 80s with his own band. Freed from the burdens as he described it, his soul could still float. But this represents the end of my passionate love for the Grateful Dead. Brent's arrival represented my loss of interest and mediocrity. This entire Concert (I have the CD!) is genius!

You are right it is their highest peak. From here on in it is downhill. Heroine, Jerry's stroke. Losing Donna and Keith who were fluid for the pounding square 80's beats that lost that flow for the tiresome and tired country Bob led nostalgia. The crystal fluid leads and floating gone. I preferred seeing Jerry by himself, older but happy and playing what HE wanted when HE wanted. Him , his band and David Grisholm. Stuff. The other peak being Pig Pens last strong year, 1971!

I never "got" the dead like my friends did. I always thought , their vocals aren't tight and they weren't as energetic or flashy. But I am wiser now. This is a whopping 2 chord song, but look what Jerry does in the in-betweens. They are a jam band. Like the Allman Brothers, don't ever expect to see a scripted show or hear the the same phrasings twice. They were an "experimental group and weren't afraid to try new stuff and ways of presenting material and not afraid to fail

Long distance runner, what you standing there for? Get up, get out, get out of the door You're playing cold music on the barroom floor Drowned in your laughter and dead to the core There's a dragon with matches that's loose on the town Takes a whole pail of water just to cool him down Fire! Fire on the mountain! Fire! Fire on the mountain! Fire! Fire on the mountain! Fire! Fire on the mountain! Almost ablaze still you don't feel the heat It takes all you got just to stay on the beat You say it's a living, we all gotta eat But you're here alone, there's no one to compete If mercy's a business, I wish it for you More than just ashes when your dreams come true Fire! Fire on the mountain! Fire! Fire on the mountain! Fire! Fire on the mountain! Fire! Fire on the mountain! Long distance runner, what you holding out for? Caught in slow motion in a dash to the door The flame from your stage has now spread to the floor You gave all you had. why you wanna give more? The more that you give, the more it will take To the thin line beyond which you really can't fake Fire! Fire on the mountain! Fire! Fire on the mountain! Fire! Fire on the mountain! Fire! Fire on the mountain!

Jerry At his absolute best with the Dead at their peak before the long decline that came next with Jerry's diabetic coma and the loss of Keith and Donna who, unlike those later, bought soul and some feminine energy as balance. The last LP I really loved is 'Shakedown Street'. It really is sad how they did not give Donna more support . Live, she could not hear her own voice, due to the sound set up and so she gets blame for sometimes being out of tune. Yet on the albums where she could hear herself her singing was an essential part of the glorious 70's chilled blissful Hippie vibe! Anyway a magic version. Jerry's tone is out of this world and here he is KING!
