Tipton, Missouri was the original hometown of Gene Clark, co-founding member of the legendary rock group, the Byrds. Originating in folk music with the New Christy Minstrels, he decided to form a rock band with Roger McGuinn. After David Crosby and two others joined, the group would become the Byrds, as they would enjoy success with two #1 Hot 100 singles ('Mr. Tambourine Man" and "Turn! Turn! Turn!"). But tensions with the group along with other factors led to Clark leaving the group. He would reunite with some of the members over the years until his death.
Clark was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in January 1991 (he attended and performed at the ceremony) but months later he passed away at age 46. It was revealed in later years that he had throat cancer.
Clark is known to be one of the pioneers in the alternative country (alt-country) genre, as well as being a legend in folk rock music.
He is buried at St. Andrews Catholic Cemetery, just outside Tipton.
