+The Al Show No it's literal. EU membership is not a gym card. It takes time. There are reforms required, institutions that need to be created. There is an entire process of economic and institutional integration with the European economy and institutions. Ukraine's main issues are corruption and lack of independence of justice - those two are 2 of the most important things that need to change to be accepted in the EU. So the whole process takes years. It took 5 years for Romania, it took 8 years for Croatia. Turkey has been on the waiting list since the late 80s. Is even harder for Ukraine which is at war. Those are not things that can be arbitrarily decided or changed by the members. They are part of EU treaties. Every country in the world abides by a Constitution, the EU abides by a set of treaties and a book of laws.

To clarify: EU and NATO are totally different things. Yes they have mishandled the NATO thing with telling Ukraine it will be welcome in the future, that was definitely misguided by NATO. But EU the European Union never made such a promise they always said "in the future perhaps" as in if they meet the criteria. There is lots of economical points that you have to meet in regards to economical stability national debt inflation and so forth and political as well, Ukraine is not even close to meeting these criteria. You will also not get your drivers license if you don´t pass the test. And EU membership would not help Ukraine anyways in their current situation, it is an economic union not a defense or military alliance. NATO played with Ukraine. The European Union did not.

True, it would be disrespectful to thoes other countries that want to join. The truth is, how quickly or slowly a country can join the EU is really up to the country in question, how quickly they are really to make the reforms needed to the political and economic system. The EU isn't like the UN where they let anyone in or the African Union which is trying to let everyone in but it's a mess because there is little incentive for the countries to do any real change, the EU makes sure the countries that want to join are on a fast track in becoming a democracy and modern economy, hence why there are problems with Hungary and Poland at the moment, because they are backsliding on that. Clearly, a lot of people don't seem to understand how the EU works, it's nothing like NATO or the UN, it's actually closer to something like the US union but in the making.

We have long seen this coming. Ukraine has a lot of economic domestic problems that it cannot fit the requirement for EU like corruptions and a lot others. NATO cannot accept Ukraine so fast because they have contested regional friction with other Nation. Apparently, they are also at war right now which made issue of membership even more complicated. Other than that, Logistical and administrative matters does not permit such action to be done overnight just like what the EU member told us in the interview. It is to be expected, if anything its a miscalculation for the Ukraine to expect them to help. EU is a very cautious organization after all. Of course its also the NATO's fault for pushing them too far and the EU fault for not reminding them earlier that EU membership cannot be easily given.

Why do people not understand. EU and NATO are totally different bodies. NATO includes states also outside of Europe like the USA and is a DEFENSE ALLIANCE. European Union is an economic union. India is fully within their right to stay neutral in this conflict as it has nothing to do with them. They are doing the best thing by staying out of it. As per a news report that I watched earlier, being a member of EU would require a lot of spending on meeting the union's norms in several areas, including infrastructure. That report further stated that some of the smaller EU members are struggling with the cost of membership. So the question is will Ukraine be able to afford the membership. Also it seems like Zelensky is doing his own version of blackmailing the EU.
@vilena5308

Correct. Ukraine simply does not even fill out the Copenhagen criteria at the moment. Zelensky used this as a political stunt. Well-done actually in my opinion, he grabbed the chance and gave it a go, but some fast-track program was never a true possibility. One just needed to google criteria for the EU membership to see that.

Agree with the report partially. Annexing Ukraine to the EU =/= helping Ukraine with the War they are going through. The first one is a long process that requires several, long, tedious bureaucratic processes to ensure the stability of the rest of the members, and, as a kind reminder, created in order to PREVENT war and foster development between the members. The second is what is already happening. All the EU countries stand with Ukraine, providing emergency aid and receiving refugees. But hey.... let's focus on what's more important, shall we? 'Betrayal' Accepting Ukraine in the EU, as symbolic as it might be, would not be an act of kindness to help short terms, but neither a 'betrayal'. This report cleverly mixes them both together as one "all the same rethoric again by the EU" for whatever reason, yet intentionally. I started watching this channel because it offered what I thought was impartial news and (very good) coverage of Russia's invasion in Ukraine. Again, I was wrong.

Several European countries are part of EU and not part of NATO, think Austria, Sweden, Ireland. There are also countries in Europe that are not part of the EU, example would be Switzerland, or now also the UK. giving Ukraine an immediate membership of NATO will automatically involve whole EU into conflict. I don't think it's a betrayal but a wise decision. It's easy to say that one is brave and the other one is coward, but think about the consequences. What happen to Ukraine cannot blame to Russia alone, Blame the west and NATO itself for containing other nation around the globe with conflicting interest with them. That is the west long time strategy, to extend sphere of influence across the globe, and for what? Global dominance!!
@sskk1617

Yes but did the West clearly explain this to the Ukrainian Government? Something on the lines of "We are unlikely to let you join NATO and will not commit our militaries to fight for you. EU membership may be a distant possibility but there are no guarantees." I suspect nothing this clear was enunciated on purpose - and things were left open to interpretation. The reason, I suspect, is because the West did not want Ukraine to compromise with Russia - which Ukraine would probably have done if the West had been clear and honest. I think this is one of the main tragedies of the war.

I don't think this reporter understands how the EU works. EU is a union of states, a confederation. Memberships aren't decided by the whims of the states, are decided by our laws established through our treaties, the same way that any nation is ruled by a Constitution. EU treaties come with a set of conditions for membership: a free-market economy, human rights, a stable democracy and the rule of law, and the acceptance of all EU legislation, including of the euro. Ukraine fails 3 conditions: - human rights: Ukraine has a problem with the way it treats minorities, particularly not recognizing their languages. In the past couple of years, it did some progress towards changing that, but there is more to be done. - stable democracy - the oligarchs have too much control over the political establishment and is not clear how free democracy really is. And is also a country at war. - rule of law: this is very important for the EU. An independent justice. And, well... like a week or two before the invasion, while Europe and US were trying to deescalate and negotiate with Russia, Zelensky was busy trying to send the former President to jail, so judge for yourselves. After that, there are a shit ton of EU laws, that Ukraine would have to adopt, institutions that would have to create, and there is a whole integration process. Those take time... they take years, you can't do them overnight. More importantly, the EU simply can't accept a country at war or with a separatist movement. Is against our law. To join Ukraine, above anything else, Ukraine would have to make peace with Russia and solve once and for all its Crimea, Donbas, and Luhansk issues.

Joining EU isn't going to ensure its short term future either. It's getting massive financial support from both EU and US. We have provided Ukraine with billions and billions of euros worth of support and pivotal intel. Ukrainian forces know where and when to ambush Russian supply convoys, because they are in close contact with western intelligence. Europe has accepted millions of refugees with open arms. On top of that over 22,000 western volunteers are ready to give up their lives for Ukraine. Yet "we" just stand up and clap. You do understand we are trying to help them without starting a 3rd world war...
@rakeshs6239

@ Victor M, you are not helping at all but inflaming the situation. By giving weapons and ammunition, you are already provoking it. Russia has already encircled the capital. This is not Vietnam or Afghanistan, battles are taking place in urban areas. It is the Ukrainians who are dying and families being dispersed. Unlike Iraq and in Syria, the West don't want to enter the conflict of fear of catastrophe. They are only happy in support but nothing else. The you see the EU leaders laughing while Zelensky gets stressed. That's support for you.

If EU would allow Ukraine to join "the team", it would turn itself into a IIIWW - no one want's this scenario to happen, think twice, they are already pumping bilions of dollars into Ukraine (which is a good thing), by supplying war-tech. This is not as easy as: sure, let's join the fight - consequences could be disastrous. Behind the stage connections, deals, dependencies as very strong here, hence it's not as easy as we may think. I would love to see this happening, I mean saving Ukraine by sending Armies from all the EU countries, but this would empose an astronomical risk to us all. We have to keep on doing what we're doing right now to stop this ASAP, as innocent people are dying - I really believe that this conflict will end soon. Help is on it's way nonetheless - there's stuff happening about which we do not know... "troops" are on their way to support Ukraine.

Why would you want the Ukrainians to fight the war, which they clearly can't win militarily. Why not make a post-war10 year economic strategy for Ukraine with EU guarantees, which will help them have a ceasefire deal, with military neutrality offered to Russia. More the EU puts their political capital behind the Ukrainians, better terms of ending the war Ukraine can negotiate. Letting them fight only means you guys want an Iraq style insurgency. He must've known that Ukraine alone cannot win a fight against Russia, and until Ukraine joins NATO, all the NATO members wouldn't help Ukraine fully, even the world knows that much. Ukrainian people are certainly very brave and they did the same thing that every other member of any country would do. However I'm very very upset with what US has been doing in all this. Even in 2007 Joe Biden gave speech in which he told others that if we try to push NATO to countries which are near Russia's borders, then they will certainly retaliate\still they didn't deny Ukraine NATO membership. Otherwise this war would've been avoided. And US would've done the same thing, if it would've happened with US instead of Russia. So that is why Ukraine was just a pawn of US in this war.
