I'm a novice in process of building a raised planter with a pond at one end and came to the same conclusion as you have here - that the pump will work much better in a relatively clean water chamber. Allow gravity to do as much of the work as possible. Glad I found this video because I have been posting on a pond forum and copped for some flack.

Good sharing! I had a gravity fed bottom drain system for my Koi before.. the problem was that after about 2 years..gravel/leaves/sand settled at the bottom of the pipe and choked the whole system. I got a plumber to flush it out with pressure jets but was unable to clear the sediments completly. I got a handy man to seal my bottom drain and did a retro fit piping like yours but added slopes with concrete and have had no issues for the past 5 years.

This is perfect! I am currently rebuilding my pond and this has explained / made me understand this a lot better. I have a couple of questions through, is it literally just gravity / water pressure that sends the water from the bottom drain into the filter? Does it matter where the filter is placed, for instance can it be higher than the pond or does it need to be the same height or lower? and is it worth fitting some sort of valve to stop water coming into the filter to carry out maintenance on the filter or would that just cause problems?

Neil, thanks for putting this all into layman's terms! Out of interest, with the bottom drain scenario, where would one connect a skimmer or is the water from these not worth filtering and is usually just put back into the pond (possibly via jets to introduce movement)?
@neilryan9664
3 жыл бұрын
Skimmer depends again on gravity or pump system. It is definitely worth filtering. Filtering water from the bottom and top of the pond is ideal really. Some people run separate filters for the skimmer and some run it through the same system as the bottom drain

@@neilryan9664 Many thanks for taking the time to reply and for your advice. My skimmer will probably be gravity so I will whack the out-fall through the main filter. I assume I can just T into the main 4" line from the bottom drain to the filter?! Are you able to give advice on Pump sizing...I am really confused what with “water in motion” calcs, the need to “power” a return jets to push the water round the pond and the large total water volume along with turnover recommendations for “healthy” water then add in the question of dry or submerged and my mind is blown! Great video. I'm trying to figure out flow rate and pipe sizes for over stocked pool? Is the whole idea to match the correct pipe size to pump size so there is no draw down in each chamber/barrel so you have a lower flow rate? Or in an over stock koi pond/pool would it be better to oversize my pump to have draw down in each chamber or barrel in my case. I was planning to have two retro fit bottom drain pipes going into my 1st 55 gallon static K1 barrel with both being 2"/50mm pipes, than into the 2nd 55 gallon static K1 barrel with a 3"/76mm pipe, then into my 3rd 55 gallon moving bed K1 barrel, then into my 4th 55 gallon moving bed K1 barrel then to a dry 3500 gph/13248 lph pump back to the pool water fall. I figure a ball valve/gate valve can be closed off before the pump to adjust the flow rate? Thanks all for any help asap.

No, not if the filter is installed at the same level as the pond! Think of it like a “spirit level”! An easy way to demonstrate it if you are having trouble grasping the concept is to attach 2 funnels to a 1 meter length of hose, hold them vertically at the same level and get someone to fill one with water. If held level both will have the same water level, if you raise one, water will overflow the other! It’s exactly the same with a pond and filter system, the water will find “the level”!

Maybe a silly question but a lot of in pond pumps say that they can’t be used for swim ponds due to the risk of electric shock. Dry run pumps that you sit 2m away and lower than the pond level seem to be more expensive compared to submerged pumps with the same L per hr capacity. So is it safe to put a submersible pump into the filter system fed by a bottom drain, as surely this water is a continuous route of electric conduction back to the pond? Thanks
