There were several stars in this film whose careers either started in the 50s (as adults) or had their peak popularity in the 50s who are in this movie. Eve Arden (Principle McGee), Joan Blondell (Vi), Sid Caesar (Coach Calhoun), Doody Goodman (Blanche), Alice Ghostley (Mrs. Murdock), and Edd Byrnes (Vince Fontaine). Frankie Avalon's (Teen Angel) career began as a young adult in 1960. They all continued to work past the 50s and 60s obviously. In 1982 came "Grease 2." I saw both in theaters when there were first released. I went to the movies 3 to 5 times each week back then. I recommend "Popeye" (1980).

It is kind of peculiar to find, anyone who does not know of how Olivia appeared at the end of Grease. But in this case we see the shock effect of this scene on this woman viewing this for the first time. When I saw this movie in in a crowded movie theater in 1978, I heard a very loud audience "gasp", That audience was quite shocked when they saw "sweet", "butter-wound-not-melt-in-her-mouth" Olivia Newton-John, smoking, for the first time, along with hearing the words "Tell me about it, Stud".

Huge “Grease” fan here---but I can see why others from later generations could not get into it. I grew up in the ‘70s with Italian parents who were teens in that era, so “Grease” was religious viewing, particularly due to Travolta (everything Travolta, Stallone, and “Godfather” was BIG for us at that time). For a long time, I wanted to be Frankie Avalon’s “angel” character, as he was the slickest and coolest ever, just coming down, spitting out tough love and wisdom, then leaving. Yeah, Frenchy was like the conscience of the movie, a bit of a misfit, but someone whom everyone trusted and went to for help with stuff. Indeed, Arden and the other old-school Hollywood greats who ran the school were one of the best treats, often stealing scenes. As for the cast’s ages, yeah, that was an issue. Hell, Stockard “Rizzo” Channing was 34 when this was filmed. When I heard that quote again at the end during your reaction, when someone asks, “What are we going to do after graduation,” my first thought was “File for Social Security?”

This was a movie that holds a lot of nostalgic value for me, so while I know that it is objectively not a great move, there's always a part of me that will love it. However the only song that I genuinely think slaps is Rizzo's "There Are Worse Things I Could Do", I love that song and Stockard Channing killed it.

This was a hit Broadway musical in the 70s so that might be why it was so adult. It's a nostalgic look back but also dealt with contemporary themes like abortion (Rizzo singing "There's worse things I could do" when thinking about her possible pregnancy.) I used to edit wedding videos and you wouldn't believe how many weddings did choreographed Summer Loving numbers with the groom and groomsmen as the t birds and the bride and maids of honor as the pink ladies. You'd probably think that's cool until you have to edit the thing and had to hear the song nonstop for a couple of hours. Some of them could pull it off while others were a cringefest 😛

I first saw this as a five-year-old and didn't see it again until the 20th anniversary theatrical release. It is one of the movies that a lot of young people of that generation watched and didn't pick up on innuendo. The producers found the right balance when transferring the "greasy" stage production (based in Chicago) to this iconic, widely-appealing musical film. I am rather impressed by the choreography and coordination of all the dancers and extras in the ending scene, going through two songs, and during the dance show broadcast.

My mother and sister dragged me to see this movie when it first came out, and I'm still dealing with the traumatic after-effects. (It didn't help that my sister got the soundtrack for Christmas and subjected me to it from her bedroom next door. "Summer Lovin" still makes me break out in a cold sweat.) I did get them back by asking out loud in the movie theater during the slumber party scene, "Mom, what's a contraceptive?" The audience around us enjoyed that. I would say this film had more to do with the 50s revivalist movement in the 70s than the actual 1950s themselves (at least according to my parents who were in high school during that period). And yes, the "romance" in the film is entirely unbelievable -- and kind of sad really, since he has no real incentive to treat her so badly. It was just one of the creepy tropes that men wrote in movies back then where abuse leads to true love (think Han's treatment of Leia in Empire Strikes Back). You are also kinder to the music then me. But Olivia Newton John was good in it.

Never thought much of this movie/musical (American Graffiti had made the 50s very "hot" during the 70s, and "Grease" was just the next in a long series of 50's-themed movies/TV shows that were going on around that time (movies like Cooley High, Lords Of Flatbush, National Lampoon's Animal House, later Diner and eventually Back To The Future, TV shows like Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley and Sha Na Na). "American Graffiti" is '73, "Grease" is '78 so you can figure out how long they were milking that 50s nostalgia thing. (Much like the 90s milking the 70s nostalgia). Hi Alexa. Sorry I haven't contributed in a while but our tastes don't seem to sync as often as I would like. As an earlyish boomer (b.1950) and passionate 50s r&r fan, I've always been lukewarm about this movie, despite the catchy but unauthentic soundtrack and understandably popular box-office appeal. I haven't seen it but I believe the original Broadway show was edgier, featuring the brilliant voice of Alan Paul of Manhattan Transfer fame as male lead. I'm with you on Eve Arden, for my money the best thing in it. I see 'Cessnaace' here has kindly filled us in on the many veteran cameos, except that Frankie Avalon was famous for 'Venus' which he reprises here, not 'Teen angel' (Mark Dinning). It gave his street-cred a brief boost. The supporting cast was strong overall, though I can't say the same for the leads, both of whom were way too old to sustain their characters, but their careers were red-hot and nobody seemed to mind. Growing up near Melbourne, I was well familiar with the late lovely ONJ when she was barely out of school. In fact an acquaintance who attended University High boasted the dubious distinction of his band coming second to her in a school talent contest. Trading on her saucer-eyed apple-pie looks, she was inevitably bound for the top. She always struck me as having a pleasant voice when she was careful not to be too raunchy, but hardly world-class. As for that leathered, teased-up, fag-flaunting glow-up, just YUK. And as for the 'John that she wanted', he as always exudes the right amount of swagger and cool, if only I could make out what he's saying half the time. Btw, nice touch with the Shirley Jones 'Carousel' clip. Now there was a musical. One more good reason to dislike this film. My then barely pubescent sisters used to play the soundtrack ad nauseam, alternating with Abba and Kiss. Aah, the 70s put me off radio pop for life. May they never return ...
